Advice Ignored

An old man was celebrating his 90th birthday in my restaurant with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all around him. As he passed me on his way to the restroom, albeit slowly but unaided, he said to me; �Take a tip from me, don�t get old!�
So I asked him what�s the alternative?
�I don�t know.� he replied.
Death is the only alternative; surely he got my point. Didn�t he?
Life expectancy in the UK and U.S.A is an average of 78, Canada 80, The Bahamas 76, Barbados/Jamaica 73, Middle East 68-76, Russia 67, India 64, Pakistan 63, Swaziland and Botswana a frighteningly low 33.
How many of us know women who have had miscarriages? So many children who were denied their go at life? How many of us never met some or all our grandparents because of their premature death?
Think back over the years and try and count the number of infant deaths through illness, accidents or neglect that you have seen, experienced or read about.
I can�t count on my two hands how many of my friends or acquaintances died before they were old enough to leave school, let alone how many died between the ages of 18 and 30, some of them leaving small children behind. None of these were afforded the longevity of this morose old man who has had the chance to see his children grow, for them to have children of their own, and for their children to have their own children. And to think enough of him to arrange his birthday celebration.
With age should come wisdom, and if he is not yet wise enough to count his blessings, I pity him.
It goes without saying that I have disregarded his advise; I intend to live as long as possible and treat each day as a bonus because God alone knows when it will be my turn to go - hopefully though, not before he does!
