The Godless Home(Life)
Randall Barfield

Ill slap that goddamn ugly face of yours clear across the street if you dont shut that big fucking mouth! I mean now!

Ill never forget the scene outside Jimmys Hot Dog restaurant in my hometown. This was a mom addressing her boy of about 11 to 12 years old. If you can call it an address. I was an on-looker about 19 or 20 at the time. Id returned to Jimmys out of nostalgia, found the chili dogs to be just as juicy and delicious as always, and seen that theyd had a busy day. Of course, the boy cried. There were other kids around. Maybe part of his family. So much for his self-esteem, I thought as Id gotten the hot dogs and was leaving.

President Lincoln had Thanksgiving Day declared a national holiday during his administration partly because, even some 140-odd years ago, he thought too many of us were ingrates. We mention God on our currency, yet we try in other ways to be as far removed from Christianity as possible. We dont seem to realize that we can have freedom of religion and/or have the absence of it(individually) yet be a Christian nation. We dont have to disavow Christianity in thinking that we must serve every need of every Tom, Dick, and Harry or Jane. Even prayer can be returned to our public schools and those people present who are not Christians, well, are excused. The Virgin Mary was honored every school day during the month of May at our little school this year and what did the non-Catholics or non-Christians do? They stayed in the classroom keeping busy one way or another. To many of us here in South America, it doesnt seem any big deal. In this instance, its like live and let live. (Im not saying S. America is perfection. There are other instances in which, unfortunately, live and let live isnt respected.)

Now that Ive lived all these years and can look back some, I realize how much I prefer the home in which God has a presence/role. As we all know, no one or no thing is perfect, but if you, the reader, will take an informal survey by sort of jotting down a few characteristics of God-filled(no fanaticism) homes around you and Godless homes , say 20 of each, Im sure you will realize what I am talking about. If you are a young adult and will one day be bringing up your own kids, its another philosophical point to ponder. Try to see in your mind right now some of the teenagers you know. Try to group them into God-fearing and Godless homes. Which ones shinestand out? Why is that?

Im reminded of some teens I teach right now, these days. Some are absolutely great. Some are so vulgar, though, that I have to force myself against being shocked(stereotypical reaction). And I see that both types are a reflection of their homes. A mirror could never be clearer. The Godless home doesnt take into account God when a decision needs to be made. Ever. Kids never go to church for any type of training. Godless parents are their close-up examples. Can we wonder if their self-esteem is non-existent or, where existing, sadly low? Dr Schuller said basically that REAL self-esteem was tied to our relation to God, to our proximity, if you will. I agreed when I read that and still do. A family doesnt have to go to church all the time maniacally or bow and kiss floors and grounds and all that. A family doesnt have to be sad and serious in the name of religion. No. For God to have a presence or role in a certain family, it only has to acknowledge that God is practically No 1 in that household; that He is respected without being crammed down anyones already-exhausted throat. Thats all. And when this situation is de rigueur, its quite enough. Thanks for reading.
