On Health Matters Including Diets Higgins
Regarding health in general and diet in particular, here are my rules of thumb:
1. No smoking or using illicit drugs of any kind.
2. Mates should minimize nagging.
3. Just one plate of food, please---no seconds!
4. Save time for pleasure reading. Don’t be a prisoner to TV.
5. Warning:Medical researchers have recently found a link between obesity and cancer.
6. Exercise three or four times a week. A good vigorous walk is a fine type of exercise
and requires no special equipment. But a slow walk is O.K. too. Remember that some
exercise is better than no exercise. A more demanding exercise which is a happy
combination is a cardiovascular workout together with workouts involving muscle
growth and toning.
7. One cocktail or beer a day is O.K. provided you do not possess an addictive
personality. If you are a heavy drinker, you must know that one drink
is too many and a dozen drinks are not enough. Alcoholics Anonymous can be consulted if you are getting out of control. If you are instead a compulsive gambler
try Gamblers Anonymous and if you are addicted to sex seek out Sexaholics Anonymous. All three plans employ the same 12 step therapy and are presumably
based on ancient spiritual principles and rooted in sound medical therapy.
8. Although it is good to drink lots of water, try not to drink or eat later in the evening as
such consumption can disturb your sleep.
9. Having three meals a day is not a bad idea so long as one of them is light. For
example, the noon meal might be just a can of Adkins’ Low Carb Shake or instead
a salad with (say) Drew’s All Natural Salad Dressing. Some persons may prefer that
the evening meal be light. Don’t compulsively snack during the day, but an evening snack of (say) a small chuck of cheddar cheese together with Wasa Original Chrisp Bread is fine.
10. Take a bath or a shower and brush your teeth every day. You’ll feel better!
11. A loving type of sex with your mate is a good thing. For older folks and some young-
er people, I recommend quasi-sexual activities. For example, taking a shower together making generous use of soaps and other slippery substances can be pleasurable. A mutual massage using Johnson’s Baby Lotion can give great pleasure. In other words,

sex doesn’t always have to be sexual intercourse, and if intercourse occurs, there is nothing magic about the missionary position. But avoid illicit sex! There are now 50 known varieties of venereal diseases and some of them are life threatening.
12. Let us consider now a hypothetical case. A man or woman is overweight and wishes
to go on a diet plan. The person in question knows that losing weight may improve
general health and physical appearance. But a crash plan is not desirable! The first
thing to do is to consult a physician. Suppose the person does so and the doctor recommends the Sugar Buster Plan or the Adkins Diet or the South Beach Diet. To be specific, suppose the Sugar Buster Diet is favored by your medical doctor
and you are asked to purchase a copy of the main book authored by the professionals
who pioneered the plan The New Sugar Busters (Steward et al.) which sells for
$17.46 on amazon.com. Generally speaking, the Sugar Buster Diet is not as strict as
the Adkin’s Diet. The materials in this book provide handy lists containing foods
which should be avoided and foods which are O.K. The book also provides a list of
relatively tasty substitutes together with a list of easy recipes from New Orleans’s top
restaurants and a 14 day sample meal plan.
13. Get enough sleep!. Perhaps 6.5 to 8.5 hours per night is sufficient for most people.
14. It is good to focus on just one day at a time. Avoid worrying about the past or the
future. Live in the moment! There are many things you cannot control. Here are two
statements that I have found helpful. Try saying them from time to time.
The legendary golfer Walter Hagen said:

So don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.
