CHAPTER THREE

The fair was over and Hannah sat in the deserted booth counting the money theyd made. It had been more successful than anyone could have imagined and her aunt was already talking about sponsoring the booth next year. Happily for her cousins most of their customers had been young and handsome. Hannah glanced up from the money in her hands and was shocked to see Jared standing there holding a dollar in his hand. At the same time she became aware of how isolated the booth was and the fact that the fair grounds were pretty well deserted. Though she was trembling inside, she fought to keep her voice steady. Darlene or Tricia should be back in a minute.

Jared leaned into the booth, his elbows on the counter separating them. His black shirt stretched tight across his wide shoulders and chest. He gave Hannah a heart-stopping smile and said softly, I dont want a kiss from Darlene or Tricia. I want a kiss from you, darlin
Terrified, Hannah looked frantically around for any sign of one of her cousins. She glanced back into Jareds amused eyes and saw a definite challenge gleaming in the black orbs. She couldnt do this, but oh man did she ever want to. Hadnt she been fantasizing about Jared for over a year? Hadnt she dreamed of Jared being the one to kiss her for the first time? Hannah stood and moved toward the counter, vaguely remembering Darlene telling her once that Jared was too old and too wild for her. She hurriedly pushed that thought out of her mind. She wasnt going to miss this for anything. Jared watched Hannah intently as she stepped to the opposite side of the counter and reached for the money in his hand but not meeting his eyes. He let the money slip through his fingers, then said softly, Hey youre gonna have to look at me if youre gonna kiss me.

He slid his finger under her chin and tilted her head until she couldnt avoid his gaze. Hannah didnt know what he saw in her eyes but he cursed under his breath before he lowered his mouth to hers. His lips were warm and gentle and Hannah was in heaven. The kiss seemed to go on forever. Hannah felt the world tilt and grasped Jareds shoulders to keep from falling, silently cursing the counter that separated her body from the warmth of his. God, his mouth was hot and felt

oh, so forbidden. Hannah drew back slightly when she felt his tongue softly glide over her bottom lip. She opened her eyes to find Jareds black eyes blazing into hers. Was it her imagination or was he really breathing a little heavier. Hannah had forgotten to breathe at all.
Jared dropped his head to hers again and against her lips whispered, Open your mouth for me Hannah. Hannah did, for at that very moment she would have given him anything.
Hannah gasped when his tongue took possession of her mouth. Shed heard her cousins talk about this type of kissing, but had never imagined how intimate it would feel or how good. Her body on fire, Hannahs arms moved from Jareds shoulders to the nape of his neck. She held on for dear life and whimpered with a need she didnt understand. Suddenly Jared broke the kiss and peeled Hannahs hands from his body. Hazel eyes wide with wonder, Hannah stared into Jareds face. Jared swore softly and looked away when she innocently slid her tongue over lips still wet from his kiss. Damn, hed known this wasnt a good idea, but he just hadnt been able to stop himself. He raked his hand through his thick hair, opened his mouth to speak then shut it again, clenching his teeth so hard it hurt. His hot gaze slid over Hannah once more before he turned on his heel and disappeared into the night.
Hannah was brought back to the present by a loud clap of thunder. Her body again feeling the heat from that night, Hannah watched the clouds, heavy with rain, rolling toward her. The clouds released the rain in great torrents, the wind blowing it onto the porch where Hannah sat. Hannah moved to sit on the porch steps, the rain drenching her. She hoped it would cool her heated skin and wash away the embarrassment and humiliation of that night. Her face still burned whenever she thought about it. She had been so mortified that she had never told any of her cousins about the incident. How could she tell them that shed finally gotten her wish but that Jared had been so turned off hed practically run away from her?

The rain stopped and Hannah, soaked to the skin was headed into the house when she heard someone coming up the drive. Thinking it was one of her cousins Hannah turned around and walked

down to the drive. The truck splashing toward her was unfamiliar but the man inside was not. Oh God no! Not him, not now. Why hadnt she just gone into the house? She could have pretended she wasnt home. She wasnt ready to see Jared yet. Stop it Hannah, she scolded herself. You are not that scared inexperienced girl anymore. Then why do I still feel like that girl Hannah wondered? Hannah drank in the sight of him. God, he was more handsome than before. He wore a tight white t-shirt tucked into equally tight, well washed blue jeans and of course cowboy boots. Those jeans lovingly hugged his hips and muscled thighs, showing off what was between those thighs to perfection. Her mouth went dry.
