A Bit Of A Rude Awakening
Just A Guy
heard from an old flame
just the other day
kind of knocked me off my feet
it really was quite a surprise
since we hadn’t talked in years
three hours seemed like minutes
as i listened to her tales
all the things that she’d been up to
places that she’d been
and where she was right now
all the stuff I’d dumped on her
got shoved into a corner unsaid
it was as if we left me being a friend
though that was hardly how
my loves would usually end
when we finally finished talking
agreeing to keep in touch
i had a moment of sorrow
after being up so high
i stopped to recount all she had said
and it made me feel kind of bad
so much i didn’t know about her
never took the time to learn
her dreams, her aspirations
even things she did back then
much too busy scoring
to let it enter my mind
and i wondered if i looked back
how many i would find
got used and tossed away
one of the problems of my younger days
was just living for that day
in many ways i’ve grown
too many ways the same
how much i could have learned
instead i went though youth
a bit of a rotten son of a bitch
now this is not to be confused
with me wishing my life right now was different
nothing could be farther from the truth
but what seemed so damned important then
i realize was just some fluff
i could be so much richer now
if only i had taken the time
to learn more about the people i met
up and down the line
this is really just a reflection
of how she made me think
tomorrow it will probably pass
