The quality of material posted on your site and the unique opportunity to have other college students critique my work has inspired me to submit a personal essy I recently wrote for my Advanced Composition class. I wrote this essay based on my belief that we all have one special person in our life who inspires and encourages us. My essay celebrates my special person--my grandmother. [422 words]
My grandmother spent the majority of her adult life as a first grade teacher. Her passion has always been to teach children. Therefore, I suppose it is no surprise that her teaching me to read is one of my very first memories. She would sit in her oversized chair for hours with me in her lap patiently teaching me. Reading would only be the beginning of the lessons I would learn from her.
She saw me; the only child of divorced parents, floundering, having no idea which way to turn or who to turn to, she stepped into my life and began to teach me many life-lessons. From a very young age I was faced with horrendous obstacles—losing my grandfather to a heart attack, losing my maternal grandmother to suicide, and losing my mother to an unrelentless state of depression. My grandmother faced each obstacle by my side. Each time, gently explaining how to overcome these obstacles and the lessons to be learned. I began to see these obstacles as conquerable challenges. Her thoughtful words and endless encouragement allowed me to realize that good comes out of every situation. My outlook on life has changed entirely. Listening to her speak is like listening to a voice from above. She has always possessed the selflessness of a saint and the patience and heart of an angel. Her profound influence on me is immeasurable. Where would I be if she weren’t in my life? I only know I would not be the person that I am today. I would not appreciate or understand life the way that I do.
I am now grown with a family of my own, but I still look to my grandmother for strength, guidance, and encouragement. She gave me the confidence to return to college when I did not have the confidence in myself. The many challenges of working, going to school, and taking care of three children are simply too overwhelming at times. Simply hearing her angelic voice makes everything seem tolerable and worthwhile. She also has the ability to put my every-day-challenges back into perspective. My college graduation is an accomplishment I will share with my grandmother because without her I would not have believed I could do it.
The children who had Mrs. Lane for their first grade teacher were very lucky, but I am the luckiest of all because I have had the honor of having her as my lifelong teacher. To her, I owe everything that I am and everything that I will become.
