MUSIC BOX
Friendship is like a little music box full of sad and happy melodies. When Harika and I opened this music box it was the first day of high school. Two apprehensive teenage girls looking at each other in a train station, not knowing that their homes being in the same direction will bring them closer together. In amongst the flood of people in the train station, the ugly red tie, with bright green jacket gave it away that we came from the same school. In our minds, we must have simultaneously asked ourselves “Aren’t we in the same class?” A familiar face was like a treasure for us in that train station where we would never feel alone again after that day. I don’t really remember who said hi first, but I am very thankful one of us did, because my life would be so tasteless without my best friend, Harika. Her name translated into English, means“wonderful,” and that she is.
She had dark brown hair then, long before she changed the color of it every time she had the question “What is the meaning of life?” Her thick eyebrows changed shape with the time that changed her. But nothing could change those friendly green eyes which could make you feel at home when they looked at you.
She belonged to a broken family and I came from a strict one. Nothing stopped us from being there for each other. Our philosophy, which makes us more than friends, is whether things are going well or poorly, sharing is the key that binds us.
There are sparkles, which put more magic in our friendship. Like when she got our past lives read; however that is done, she learned that we were friends in one of our past lives. If it was not for her, I would have never met my husband. Her decision to come to the U.S for college changed both of our lives.
Our friendship survived many crossroads of life and an ocean between us for ten years. Now she is leaving again but this time for Turkey. We made decisions, and gave direction to our lives, but we can still hear melodies from our music box.
