The Cause That Lead To The Worse Effect Angel Garcia
The bad cause that led to the worse effect I can remember it like it was yesterday. It is a cliché, I know. But there are only so many of those that we experience together. As people and as society there are moments, specifically within the United States, that helped shape us. There is nothing that possibly shaped us, both good and bad, more than that fateful day in September. . I still remember that day. I was seven or eight. I didn’t go to school that day at all. I had a dentist appointment. My mother took me out to eat afterwards. It was a good day. My teeth looked fancy, had good food, and basically got to hang out with my mom. She got a call on the way home to pick up my brother. So we did, and I remember being really bummed out that there were no cartoons. I remember seeing the towers fall and thinking to myself, “What is going on in this world?” It is known as the worst tragedy in our countries history. It seems that everything that has to be said about that about that event. We watched those towers fall, we grieved, we recovered and we pushed on. To many of us that is where it ended. The issues is that when The Tragedy of September 11th happened, it allowed for the United States created domestic and foreign policy that causes violence and wars to because of perceived threats in order to retain our power as the top hegemonic power. The United States has in many ways, exploited the events of 9/11 to create drastic situation, and a sense of maintaining hegemony to enforce drastic policies. These policies have alienated anything that does not fit the idea of what is “good” or what is “acceptable” to the US government. This is a now commonplace for the United States now, and it seems that we as a population accept this now because we believe that we do this to protect ourselves. To further clarify. A Hegemon is basically the top country with both diplomatic, but most importantly, military power and alliances. For a very long time, the United States has been the sole hegemon. Being the top superpower in the world is a status symbol that the US holds dear. The way it helps maintain this is by constantly showing its military power to what it deems as threats. This is clear considering the last set of wars that the US was involved in. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Pakistan have cemented that when there is a country, or group which the government sees as a threat, it doesn’t not hesitate to start some sort of trouble. What is worse is the fact that through this, the US believes that it can also “fix” areas to their own benefit. There is inherent evidence that the United States has done this multiple times. The justification that the United States uses is that they are securing the entirety of the world. “We are trapped in the production of discourses in which national leaders and security speech acts emanating from realist discourses develop and reinforce a notion of national identity as synonymous with national security”. (Grondin, 04) There are plenty of examples on the domestic side of these politics showing that the US is using the paranoia of 9/11, exploiting it to gain a complete control of surveillance within the country. The recent scandal with the NSA, which has affected both domestic and foreign policy issues, has shown that we as a society are growing tired of this. W are tired of the insane measures of security in airports and across the country. It is obvious that it is time for the US to take a step back from this mindset, and focus on more important ones. There are too many issues with the new healthcare system, the economy is growing too slowly, among hundreds of other issues here at home. The issue is, it is not so cut and dry. To change our stance on Foreign policies overnight is both domestically politically disastrous and impossible, as well as strategically impossible, we have over 135 bases all around the world, to remove these forces or to not protect allies, leads to armed conflict and loss of life. This can be done gradually, there are ways we can go about this and it will go much better. The US will became a diplomatic country that deals with threats calmly and take the best course of action without this sense of fear and paranoia. “It would also allow us to forge another kind of politics centered on a different conception of the good. We need a new way of thinking and talking about social being and politics that moves us beyond security. This would perhaps be emancipatory in the true sense of the word. What this might mean, precisely, must be open to debate. But it certainly requires recognizing that security is an illusion that has forgotten it is an illusion requires recognizing that security is not the same as solidarity. It requires accepting that insecurity is part of the human condition, and thus giving up the search for the certainty of security and instead learning to tolerate the uncertainties, ambiguities and ‘insecurities’ that come with being human; it requires accepting that ‘securitizing’ an issue does not mean dealing with it politically, but bracketing It out and handing it to the state; it requires us to be brave enough to return the gift.”(Neocleous 08) It was horrible events that lead us here. It something that brought us together, and at the same time, set us apart from the rest of the world. I am absolutely certain that when you bagan to read this you thought about what you were doing. What other people were doing. How you felt. People’s reaction. The week, month, and year after. You remember all the things you’ve read and seen about that event. As you read the things the US has been doing in this paper, you’ll think back to the last wars we have seen. I remember being really bummed out that there were no cartoons. I remember seeing the towers fall and thinking to myself, “What is going on in this world?” Sadly, I still do.
