A Tour Through Colombia Juliana Carrillo
People are worrying too much about looking at Colombia’s negative side but they don’t realize what a good and beautiful country it really is. It is easier to criticize than to look at the positive aspects. Colombia has beautiful and exotic places that attract tourists. People from all over the world come to enjoy these wonderful scenes. Tourism is very important. It is not the basis of our economy, but it sure helps a lot.
In the Atlantic coast there is Cartagena, with its beautiful beaches and historical sights. Also there is Santa Marta and San Andres, which has a beautiful sea. San Andres is very popular because in its ocean you can see seven different types of blues and greens. All these beautiful cities have elegant five star hotels and delicious restaurants. A lot of tourists visit them.
At the northeast part of the country, Medellin is located. This city is known for its warm and caring people. In this beautiful city there is the “metro”, which is the only subway there is in Colombia. Medellin is very lucky to have it; therefore they are taking very good care of it. Bogotá is Colombia's capital. It is a very nice city with lots of avenues filled with cars. Its climate is cool and quite comfortable. Finally, there comes Cali, the “salsa” capital, which is a great city to live in. About one hour and a half from Cali there is the Calima Lake. Which is a really big artificial lake, where most of the “caleños” go to on weekends to practice sailing and ride on jet-skies. Its surroundings are filled with lovely farms. Cali, Medellin and Bogotá are Colombia’s biggest and most important cities.
Near Bogotá there is a little suburb called Boyacá. There, you can see lovely sights and some traditional Colombian “artesanias” that are typical objects from our country. Indians that live in this region make them. Also there is Popayán, which is one of Colombia’s most antique cities. Its buildings were built many years ago. It was destroyed in the 1980’s by a horrible earthquake, and all Colombian’s worked together to try to rebuild it. Another city that was destroyed by an earthquake was Armenia. Which is where most of the coffee we export comes from.
Colombia has beautiful places to visit like San Andres, Medellin and Boyacá. As you can see Colombia is not such a bad place as you pictured it. If you look at its positive aspects, you can realize that it is a wonderful and unique country.
