Mountain Shadow Xie
Prologue
The stormy sky was lit up by a blinding flash of lightning. Cold,
dark lightning. A flaming ember merely grazed a tree, and the
whole valley was on fire. The bright heat threatened to swarm
from the trees to the ivy tendrils that clung gingerly to the edges
of the valley. If that happened, the whole mountainside would
have caught fire. But just before that, an unbelievable miracle
happened. Where the lightning had struck the muddy earth near
a patch of wild garlic, a dark black wolf with a silvery blue stripe
running along from his long, pointed muzzle to his shaggy tail
appeared in the burning debris. His long legs, broad shoulders,
and quite muscular build seemed to startle the fire, for it began to
falter. The wolf let out a long, drawn out howl, lightning flickering
fiercely in his ice blue eyes. Stormy, dark clouds began forming in
the sky. Raindrops splattered heavily on the ground, extinguishing
hungry, merciless flames. The wolf howled once more, before he
vanished.
Chapter 1
Crickets chirped shrilly as the stars shone brightly and the moon
danced in the dark, indigo sky. A brave rabbit was chewing on a
a juicy cowslip when a twig, brittle with frost, crunched. The rabbit's
ears shot up and twitched, alert and cautious. When no more sound
echoed through the valley, it continued tearing the sweet plant apart.
Suddenly a dark black shape crashed through the bracken that
surrounded the once quiet and calm clearing. The rabbit dashed
away, but the striped beast was faster. Slamming his paws down
on the rabbit's neck, breaking it's fragile spine. Checking to make
sure there were no other predators around, he tucked into the
rich, fatty flesh. Suddenly the crickets stopped their high pitched song.
Then the worst happened.
Chapter 2
A large gray shape bowled the other wolf over. Snarling, the amber
eyed wolf pinned the black wolf to the ground. The gray wolf growled.
"Spark! Hand over the rabbit!" "Never!" Spark roared, his voice
louder than any explosion of thunder. "I will not! Your days of stealing
others' kill is over, Pine!" Spark suddenly went limp. Pine loosened
his grip, thinking Spark was defeated. But suddenly, Spark launched
himself upward, surprising Pine. Pine toppled over, and grasping his
chance like a bear grabbing a salmon, Spark clawed at pine's exposed
belly. Pine was panting heavily, gasping for breath. Spark looked pleased.
"Surrender?"
Chapter 3
Pine cringed in full submission. "Yes," he barked, "Yes. Now let me go!
Satisfied, Spark reared up on his hind paws and let Pine get up. As soon as he tested each
paw, Pine raced off, scurrying hastily back to his den under an ancient
sycamore, which was called, "The Dark Sycamore". Grabbing the remains of his
prey, he darted off. Flattening the ferns and bushes in his way, he reached a cave in the northern
part of what was known as, "Storm Valley", named for the abundant storms. He slid through
the tight entrance and popped out into the main chamber. He tasted the air and smelt nothing
besides his own scent. He lived alone. But despite that, he was still happy with his adventurous life.
Settling down in his nest of feathers, sheepswool and bracken, he cruched through the small bones
of the rabbit. After finishing his meal, he heard thunder. "Trouble!" He thought nervously. The valley was very dry,
and there for lightning could easily cause a forest fire. Tasting the air, he scent rain, but it was coming later. He
raced into the open, sprinting with long strides that gobbled up the distance between his cave sand where he had
howled once. Lightning struck a nearby oak, and he gasped as it fell, almost crushing him. He was just in time as
he burst into the Meeting Clearing. Fire was already lapping at the few beeches and birches that protected the sacred
area. "Out! Get out and run far and fast!" Spark howled. The animals did not hesitate as they tumbled through the thick
undergrowth. Spark turned to face the fire. The flames were raging through the last circle of trees. Could he stop it this time?
Chapter 3
"Of course you can." He shook his head. The voice of his mother, Heather, was sweeping through his mind. "Don't give up."
This time his father, Rock, was rumbling. "Come on, big brother! Stop it!" His little brother, River, called out to him, his voice
echoing through Spark's heart. Spark's frightened gaze was replaced with a look of determination. "I can." He thought. Focusing
his attention on the stormy clouds, he began to howl, his power ringing through his heart tending cry. The clouds shook. Suddenly,
something cold hit his nose. Spark held his breath. "Rain?" He wondered longingly. More wetness hit him, on his thick pelt and his
silver ears. He opened his eyes. It was rain! Falling swiftly and flattening the rampaging flames that had cornered him. As the clouds
were blown away, a rainbow glowed. "You did it." The three voices chorused strongly. Spark felt the sun warm his entire body. His heart
was heated as well. "Yes." He thought. "Yes, I did."
