Little Finchu And His Attempt At Freedom Sidrah Zaheer
There was once a little male zebra finch called Finchu. He was a very sweet little bird. He lived in a cage owned by a kind little girl. She was very good in taking care of him. So he was really very happy staying with her at first. But after a little time had passed, Finchu began to get bored living all alone by himself in the cage with none of his kind to talk to and to play with. One thing that Finchu loved to do was to sing. He could go on singing all day long without getting tired or wanting a break for himself. But gradually, Finchu’s singing timings reduced and he sang only when he heard other birds from the outside. Hearing the other birds happily twittering outside, he longed to be free himself. He thought of how beautiful the world outside would be. One day he decided that he will fly away in the morning when the little girl would come around the cage to bring for him fresh water and food. That way, he will quickly fly away from the cage when the cage window will be opened for a brief moment. Fly away to his freedom in the air and to the outside world, where he can meet his own type of birds. He will be able to see the trees, the flowers and all the greenery. Since he was too small and swift, he thought, he will be far too quick for the little girl to catch him. After thinking about such a plan and feeling very satisfied with his ideas of his freedom, he sat there in the cage on his swing singing happily the songs of freedom. The next morning as per the routine the little girl came around to see that little Finchu gets his food and his fresh water. But before she did that, she looked at little Finchu for a while, admiring his beautiful little beady eyes and his cute little yellowish orange beak. She talked with Finchu in her own language that he could not understand. Unlike before, whenever the little girl came near his cage, he was not afraid anymore. This time as well, he stared back at her and his heart did not pound as it used to when he first arrived in this new home for him. He looked back at the little girl and in his innocence began singing the same song of his freedom. The song that told about many wonderful trees and beautiful flowers he would see when he will fly away in the open air. He sang about the long flight he would be able to take without anyone stopping him or any boundaries limiting his moves. The little girl saw Finchu singing so beautifully that she smiled and laughed in joy to see the little bird so happy to be her pet. She felt so proud of herself that she has taken good care of her little bird pet that her father gave her as a birthday present. She happily went on to change the food and bring fresh water for Finchu. As she opened his cage to do all that, Finchu tried to fly out of the cage window. Since the cage window was too small for him to get out from, he could not do so when the little girl was also blocking his way out with her hands inside his cage while putting his food and water. Finchu instantly flew and sat at the corner of the cage. The little girl saw that Finchu is not excited anymore as he was a while ago. She looked at him and he sat at the corner all quiet, even though she did nothing to scare him and just got him fresh food and water like every morning. The little girl realized quickly that Finchu is perhaps not as happy as he sometimes appears. She felt bad about the whole situation and thought of giving him freedom. She thought that perhaps that way, he could feel happy in the fresh open air outside. So when she opened the little cage window for Finchu to fly away, he did not get out. He flew back to his swing and started singing again. Finchu thought to himself, that perhaps the little girl wants me out to carry me in her hands, and he was afraid to get inside of her hands. In Finchu’s tiny imagination, he could never wonder that she was giving him a chance to fly away. So, he thought I will try some other day. She is a nice little girl and brings me fresh food and water every morning, so I might as well stay a few more days and try again later. So, he sat there in his swing singing again the song of his freedom he so much loved. The little girl seeing this laughed again and looked at him admiringly.
