Hole Land
R C Kohl

There is a place where holes reside,
Its called Hole Land and its an easy place to hide.
Some of the holes are big though some are small,
Some are short and others tall.
A few are green or blue or red,
Many are as black as under your bed.
You may feel a hole thats hard or one thats soft,
Most are a mixture, as often as not.
A hole may be complete, a whole hole, that is;
Or it might be a half hole, for the smaller kids.

Now the thing about holes is that they like to wander,
From near and far, over here and yonder.
On the roof, on the floor, in a wall or ceiling,
But most of all, to where there are feelings.
Thats when they cause a sense of emptiness or doubt,
Or just a general state that there is no love about.
When this happens you may think I have a hole inside,
And you may feel you have fallen down Hole Lands slide.
You look, see and sense the darkness around,
A world that has let the void surround.
You may want to fill the hole with food or anger or such,
But that will make the hole bigger, much bigger than much.

A hole will only grow when given these things,
So think of those that love you, and the joy that brings.
And lest you believe there is no one who cares,
Think of the person who gives you these lines of odd rhyming pairs.
He or she loves you and promises to do their part,
To help make go away the hole you feel in your heart.

"Hello, Mr. Kohl! I am a student at Belmont University and aspiring childrens book illustrator. I wondered if I might illustrate a book dummy for Hole Land with your permission. As a child of divorce and the oldest of three children, it really resonated with me. If youre saving it, I understand. I will use a book from the public domain instead. It is for a class assignment, but I would also like to use it in my portfolio, if thats okay. Of course, with the proper credit going to you. At the very least, I want you to know that I enjoyed your poem. Thank you very much. Olivia" -- Olivia, Nashville, United States, TN.
