Room 86b
Lucy Midnight

"This was my very first case. Since you’ll be taking over my job when I retire I figured you outta see some of the case’s I’ve solved so you know how a pro does things", detective Wallace said to her new friend detective Aubrey. "What happened in room 86B"? "Well let’s just say it’s very complicated to explain if you start just in the middle". It’s a rainy June day, and David and his girlfriend Heather are home alone in their small apartment on the north side of town when someone knocks on the door. Heather had fallen asleep so David went to get the door. "Yes, can I he-". "Shut up. If you say anything else I’ll kill you". Just like that David was abducted from his small apartment. He never thought anything like this could happen to him or Heather in this part of town. But this proved him wrong. When the man put David in his car he saw a woman that he barely even knew in the back seat, handcuffed to a bar on the backside of the driver’s seat. "Get in", The man said pushing David into the car. The man that neither one of the two victims knew handcuffed David to the back of the passenger side seat. After he completed this he went around the front of the car and got in the driver’s seat. While he was walking around the car, the woman slipped David a note. David quickly read the note, it said, ‘what do you think he’s going to do to us? By the way, my names Melanie. What about yours?’ David found a pen and wrote ‘David’. The woman read the note and nodded as the man was getting into the car. "What are you nodding about"? The man reached into the back and slapped Melanie and she fell over into David’s lap in pain. "That’s what I thought. You’re nothing but a baby going to back to her lover". David looked over at him and said, "She’s not my lover". The man just gave him a half smile and turned on the car. He drove what seemed like forever. But then he pulled into a small hotel just outside of the closest town. He went in and requested a room that was on the bottom floor but on the backside of the hotel. The woman behind the counter handed him the key to the room 8. He took the key and walked very cautiously out the door. He drove around to the other side and unlocked the handcuffs. "Better be careful. You never know who will come up and kill you in the night", said the driver with a slight smirk. He drove away leaving David and Melanie alone in the middle of nowhere. David went to the room and opened the door. He noticed one thing and only one thing. It only had one bed. Melanie went over and sat on the bed; picked up the receiver to figure out if it had a dial tone. "David we have no phone". "Yeah and I have no place to sleep but the floor". "What about the bed"? "Um... no". "Why not"? "I have a girlfriend back at my apartment". "Is she here now"? "No, but I don’t want to do something I’d regret". "Like what"? "Well for one I sleep naked and I wouldn’t want to poke you in the back all night long". "Then why don’t we just have sex"? "That’ the other reason". "You couldn’t obviously hurt me". "Well I’m trying to be very truthful to my girlfriend. It’s kind of hard to do that if you fucking another girl". "True". They slept peacefully that night. David slept on the floor and Melanie slept in the bed. In the dead of night Melanie got a bright idea. She decided that the next evening she’d kick David out and then give him a note telling him to go back to the motel just inside of Burkesville. There she would dress up like his girlfriend and seduce him. The following day she kicked him out as planned. He went past a place that had a pay phone just outside of it. It began to ring. The ringing of phones got on David’s nerves, so like him he went to answer it. "Hello"? "Come to the Burkesville Inn at 5:30". Then there was nothing else except a click. David thought about what the mysterious caller had said. He decided he’d go if Heather wasn’t home. He went back to his apartment and she wasn’t there. So right then and there he decided that he’d go to the Inn. But what he also knew was who the mysterious caller was. When he arrived to the Inn he found a candle and note. The note read: ‘David, I yearn for you to come to room 86B. I will be waiting for you. Love Room 86B’. The note surprised David. He neatly folded it and placed it in his pocket. He carefully blew out the candle. He headed to the room and began sweating. What if he was wrong about whom he thought it was on the phone. Well he was about to find out. He looked up at the room number; he took a deep breath and went in. He went to turn on the lights but a voice behind said not to. "How do I know your not some kind of psycho"? "Believe me you’ll know in a just a few minutes", he thought for a moment he recognized the voice but shook it off. "What do you want me to do"? "Take off you clothes and make yourself comfortable". "Okay". David undressed himself and laid down on the bed. He looked over at the bathroom. The blaring light reflected off the all white floor and walls. He saw the mysterious woman drop her rope exposing her bare body. David became stiff and hard. At that same moment the bathroom light went out. The woman came over to David and felt of his stiffness. "Hard aren’t we"? David nodded abruptly. She slid her mouth over his tip and began to lick. He began moaning and pushing her head ever so slightly downward. He was still moaning even after she had gotten done. She pulled herself on top of him and started to have sexual intercourse just as he said, "wait a minute". She covered his mouth with hers and began intercourse once again. This time he didn’t stop her. This went on for hours on in. When David awoke the next evening he saw Melanie sitting over in an armchair in the same robe the mysterious woman had been wearing. "What are you doing here"? "What do you think I’m doing here"? "Well I just had the best sex I have ever had". "Who with"? "I really don’t know." "Well I know who she is". "Who"? "Me". "What? It couldn’t have been you". "Why do you think I had you not turn on the light"? "No No". "Afraid so". "Oh well it was only once". "Actually 5 times". "Okay I get your point". "Well it was". "You’re not helping the fact that I cheated on my girlfriend". "How do you know she hasn’t been out doing some other guy while you’re away on business or something"? "I don’t". "My point has been made". David said nothing he simply got up and got dressed. He left to find Heather. He went back to their apartment and he found Heather in bed with his best friend Jonathan. "What the hell Heather"? "Well it’s only been going on for the last 2 months". "You mean to tell me you’ve been having sex with a married man for 2 months". "Yeah. So". David simply left in disgust. He never went back to apartment. "You mean to tell me he wasn’t mad that his girlfriend of 2 years was cheating on him with his best friend?", said detective Aubrey "Not one bit angry". "Man if my man did that I’d probably kill him". "I know what you mean". "So where’d David go from there"? David went back to the Inn with his head down. He realized that Melanie was right and he wanted to apologize to her. When he got to the room. She was waiting for him. "I’m sorry Melanie". "It’s okay". "Why don’t you go home"? "I don’t feel like it". "Why not"? "I just don’t okay". "Okay. Well I’m going to wash my face. After what I saw I need to splash my face". "What ever you need to do before we talk things over". David begins to wash face his face and started talking to Melanie. Melanie lights a cigarette and listens to David at the same time. Melanie notices there’s a window open and she didn’t open it. So who did? At that moment a necktie goes around Melanie’s neck strangling her. At her last instance of breath she falls to the floor. David is still going on about what’s going to happen after their conversation. David went into the main room of the motel room. He was shocked and gagged when he saw her body just lying there on the floor. He ran over to her and began trying to revive her but was unsuccessful. So he quickly went over to the phone and dialed 911. After he put down the receiver he thought, ’What if they think I had something to do with her death’? He decided that he would make in look as if she was attacked from behind and then not know who had done it. He went around to everywhere he’d been and wiped all of his fingerprints off everything. He started with the phone receiver. Then he went to the bathroom and wiped off the sink and faucet. The light switches came next, and last but not the least the doorknob. Just as he was leaving the police were pulling in. "Here’s the police report", said detective Wallace handing a single piece of paper to detective Aubrey. "This is it"? "Yeah. Only the victim’s fingerprints were found. All though the forensics did find a smudged finger print on the headboard, it wasn’t a good enough one to test". "You mean to tell me all they found was the body and her fingerprints"? "Pretty much". "How’d you solve it then"? "Well it was what the guy that kidnapped her and David that gave us the man that saw her alive the last time". "David". "So who did kill her"? "Well it took nearly two weeks to find David so we could question him". "Why was he hiding? He didn’t do it". "See he knew that but we didn’t at that point in time". "Okay so what happened after you found him"? "We brought him in and he was a nervous wreck the whole time". "Did he admit to being there"? "Yeah he was very honest". "David what happened next"? "Well I was in the bathroom washing my face talking to Melanie from there. She lit a cigarette and she didn’t say anything after that". "Wait a minute. How’d you know she lit a cigarette and why didn’t we find one at the scene"? "Probably because she dropped it while she was being killed. I knew she lit one because one I heard the lighter and two I smelled the smoke". "That means she was alive at least a minute after she lit the cigarette". "How do you figure that"? "Because the distance from the bathroom to the chair is 6 feet. It takes at least one minute for smoke to travel up to 6 feet". "Okay. I learned something new today". "David, did Melanie or Ms. Voyles have any enemies to your knowledge"? "No, although I only knew her from the time we were kidnapped to the time that she died". "Were you involved with her"? "Yes". "You mean you had a sexual relationship with a woman you barely even knew"? "Yes". "David are you being completely honest with me today"? "Yes". "You’re free to go". David left the police station and he went to the only place he thought he could go. His old apartment. He paid for it so he was going to live in it. Once he got to the apartment he picked up all Heather’s belongings and tossed them out the window. He sterilized the sheets because only God knows what went on in that bed on those sheets. When Heather got back to the apartment, David was in the apartment talking to the detective Wallace. "Who the hell is this tramp David"? "I only see one tramp here and it isn’t me and she just walked in". "Well the only reason I cheated on David was because I saw him go and ch-". "Spit it out Heather". "I don’t have to tell you anything without the appearance of my lawyer". "Heather your lawyer is my lawyer". "Heather spit it out". "Alright I lied". "You lied about what"? "About the 2 month thing". "You mean you saw Melanie and me". "Yes and that’s why I-". "That’s why you killed Melanie Voyles". "Yes I did and I wouldn’t change it if I could". "You’re under arrest for the murder of Melanie Voyles." "Heather I can’t believe you did that to that poor poor woman". 3 months later Heather was convicted of murder in the second degree. She was sentenced to 50 years to life without parole. Then she became a prisoner in a maximum-security prison. "She has served 25 years there and she is someone’s bitch by now". "Well a sad ending for a sick woman".
