Emerald Green
If only he knew how she felt. It would make her life a great deal easier if he could read her mind. She had to stop day dreaming like this. She was slipping behind in her school work and drifting away from her parents but she still could not help remembering the first day she saw him five and a half months ago. She saw a lonely person sitting by himself. He must have felt her staring. The first thing she had noticed were his dazzling emerald eyes. They were so wide and so green. She had never seen anybody’s eyes that could have possibly been that green. His wild brown curls were short and they framed his narrow, pale face. He definitely did not look feminine being the average height for a guy his age. When he first looked at her she was lost for words. It felt like he was looking into her soul. She was drowning in his green eyes. Something was not right. He had quiet laugh at a private joke with his mind and turned around to finish his sketch for art. She felt extremely rejected for a few moments and suddenly calm washed over her. She put him at the back of her mind and continued drawing her dragon. Darrel. That had been the first time she had seen him. Now she found herself constantly dreaming of him. She knew she should spend more time with her parents or least talk to them more then once a day. She knew she was in year eleven and should be doing at least some homework to catch up. Her social life was disappearing. She saw her friends at school and that was about it. He always invaded her thoughts so when she started something she would never finish it. He just happened to be every single one of her classes and strangely she had never heard him say a word. Five and a half months and not a word. Strange. He always just sat in class wrapped up in his own thoughts. When he did talk he talked so quietly that only the person that he wanted to hear got to listen. There. She was doing it again. Floating in green. Her room had been painted a pastel green when she was a small child. Now she knew him, her room was a much better place to go over her thoughts. She sat on her bed with all her homework spread out neatly in front of her. She looked at her quilt cover. Imperial purple is a pretty colour too. Paper was scattered around on the grey carpet. She knew they were all poems and writing she had been doing lately. If only her homework was as easy as thinking of Darrel. Knock, knock, knock! Someone was knocking at the door obviously trying to disturb her train of thought. Her mum must be at the door. Her parents worried too much. “Come in!” She called. Her mum looked awfully worried. She had dark circles under her eyes and worry lines all over her face. “Lucy, dear...” Her mum started. There was an uncomfortable silence which marked the distance that was between the mother and daughter. “Umm…yes?” Lucy no idea on what she was going to say. Hopefully her mum would do most of the talking. “We need to talk,” her mum said then waiting to see if Lucy was going to say anything. “I know. We don’t talk that much anymore. Do we?” What else was Lucy going to say? “No, we don’t talk very often.” A second unbearable silence. It seemed that for minutes they just stared at each other but for them it felt like days. Lucy could not and would not put up with anymore silences. “Mum. I know you came here for a reason. You must have something to say. Tell me.” “You don’t spend that much time with your friends on the weekends or after school. You don’t do your homework and you have been getting bad grades because of it. Imagine how it is for me and your father. We don’t know what you’re going through because you won’t tell us about what is happening in your life. You just sit in the back garden and do nothing.” “Well, you know I do think about what I am going to do with my life.” Her mum smiled a sly grin, “So Lucy, What are you going to do with your life?” Lucy went bright red. You are a stupid girl Lucy. What are you going to say to her now? She thought. Lucy glanced around her room from her mum standing in the doorway to her one and only electric guitar in the corner. That’s it! “I’m going to play the electric guitar in a band.” “Lucy… I am your mother and I am really worried about you.” Her mum changed the subject. “There is no point mum.” Lucy looked down at her homework. She could not look her mum in the eyes. She thought about Darrel and how he might have comforted her in this situation. She smiled and quickly dismissed the thought. Sometimes she thought her mum was telepathic. “Yes there is a point Lucy Katrene Whing. Your father and I are going to get you to a psychiatrist.” “Why mum? I am fine. You don’t have to worry about me.” Lucy knew her mum would not go that far. “Yes Lucy. You have obvious problems,” her mother looked around the room, “And clean up this room. It’s a pigsty. I’ve been asking you to do it for two weeks now and it is getting worse.” Her mum gave her one last look and closed the door when she left. Lucy could feel Darrel in her mind. Was that normal? She felt calm again and found no need to worry. Her mother always nagged her to clean up her room because that was the only other time that she would see her apart from dinner time. Lucy kind of felt sorry for her mum because she was their only child and her mum probably thought Lucy was a failure. She moved her homework out of the way and lied down. She would have to get some sleep so she could concentrate. She shut her eyes and fell to sleep. He had been thinking of her for too long. If he got to know her then he would ruin her life. All she thought about was him so he kept her company when she was lonely and calmed her when she was confused of frustrated. He did not have anybody else. But now he had her. His life had been terrible. His parents had died when he was young and everyone who took him in died eventually. He learned no to live with anyone. He was a curse. He was sixteen now and he lived by himself. If he lived with someone they would probably die. He thought of her now. The first time he had seen her. He knew she was staring at him. He had to turn around to see who it was. She was an odd looking person. Her eyes looked like black pools. Strangely, when he thought about her now he remembered her eyes first. She had coffee coloured skin and sandy hair but they were insignificant compared to her eyes. He had laughed at himself because if he was close to her she would probably die. He had to make her forget. He had to forget but it had been so long and he knew about her whole life, he knew what she thought about and he knew what she thought about certain people. He knew Lucy really well. How could he forget? Days passed like shadows. Life was so dull now. She was never depressed and she was never bored. She sometimes wondered if she was still alive. The fact that her parents were serious about taking her to a psychiatrist drove her made. Each session she told the psychiatrist she was fine and each session the psychiatrist was determined to find something wrong with her. She dreaded her next visit. It had been seven months since she had first seen him. She had watched her life slowly collapse about her. There was nothing left for her to live for apart from Darrel. He had never actually talked to her but she felt so close to him. She still had not heard his voice. There was always that never-ending presence in her mind. “I must be going crazy,” She said to her self. She went to school as usual. It would be the end of year soon and then only one more year left of school. Lucy was sitting through her normal uninteresting lessons when a foreign thought burst into her mind. It was definitely not a direct message. The green splodge that had formed in her mind was trying to tell her something. Up to this point she was very frightened. It seemed to say – Meet me soon Her mind returned to its original state. Meet me soon? Who could that be? Who else? The bell for lunch time rang. Lucy somehow knew where she had to go. She walked slowly and nervously to the oval. The grass looked so green. She saw a lone figure in the middle of the oval. It was him. It seemed like days before she reached him. He did not come to meet her he just stood and waited. She stood an arms distance away from him. He acknowledged her presence with a nod. “Please say something. I still haven’t heard your voice,” She said being brave by saying something. He took a deep breath and looked into her eyes. His eyes said so many words without him having to say anything. He was really worried. “Would you die for me?” he said so quietly it was barely audible. She looked at him confused. What was he talking about? He continued to look at her waiting for an answer. For a few moments she thought about her life. It had been brilliant. “Yes. I would.” He looked relieved. He closed the distance between them with one stride. He held her in his arms and looked in to her eyes. “You are welcome to live forever by my heart. I promise,” he lovingly kissed her. Moments later she drew back. Her face was distorted with pain. She tried to say something but the words just would not come out. Her skin looked so grainy. There was a slight breeze and all her remaining skin blew off her body like dust. He looked at her. Now she was a bloodied figure wearing clothes. The wind was getting stronger and Lucy was blowing away. Green tears were streaming down Darrel’s face. There was nothing left of her except a pile of rumpled clothes on the grass. He looked around with blurry eyes and saw what he was looking for. An unearthly soul floated before him. You promised. She whispered. He hardly heard her. “I am sorry Lucy,” and her spirit dived into his body. The pain was unbearable for a few moments then it subsided. He was still crying uncontrollable tears. His heart felt so heavy now. He collapsed onto the ground. Why did the people he cared about have to die? Why?
