The Battle With The Bat This following story is about one of the only times in my life when I felt true fear. It all started the day I went to my girlfriend’s lake cabin. It was a warm Friday night. My girlfriend’s sister Emily picked me up from my house around 6 PM for the hour long drive to my girlfriend’s Minnesota lake cabin by Lake Melissa. It was seven something when we got to her cabin. Her cabin was an old, two-story house with six bedrooms. Three rooms had double beds and one had two double beds. It was a cozy cabin with lots of room and comfy couches. I went upstairs to put my stuff away in my corner room upstairs. My room was creepy. Someone probably died in that house and it was probably in my bed. I always have crappy luck like that. Well, I had to keep my cool. I was going to be the man of the house. It was just me, Mike, (that’s my name and I am 15), my girlfriend Eve, who is also 15, her 17 year old sister Emily, her 11 year old sister Jane, Jane’s 12 year old friend Kelsey, and Eve, Emily, and Jane’s mom. The first couple hours were quite pleasant. We just sat around and watched TV and I showed my girlfriend a few cheesy card tricks to try to show off my magician side. It didn’t work. Then around 11 PM my girlfriend and I decided to go out onto the back porch to light off some firecrackers and bottle rockets. I lit a firecracker off on the porch and it left a little burn mark on the porch which I hope they haven’t noticed yet even though I just told Eve on the phone (she didn‘t care). Then as Eve glared at me for lighting the firecracker, a terrified scream came from inside the cabin from Emily. "BAT!!!!" My heart sank. Bats suck. They weren’t that bad then, but now they really suck. hing straight out of a HALLOWEEN movie took place. The lights in the room went out. Now it really sucked. I had to creep into the dark room were the evil being hid in the darkness. I grabbed my bag and dragged it out of the room. I took four AA batteries out of a little Zip-Lock baggie and I put them in a flashlight. Then I went downstairs and got a new 60-watt light bulb for the room. I then crept into the horrid room and replaced the light bulb. The bat was gone. We couldn’t find it. I went down on my knees to find it. There it was behind the headboard staring back at me as if saying, "I’m going to get you." Emily and I then forced Kelsey back into the room with the bat and she eventually caught the bat with the net and she covered it’s body with a box and it’s head with a pillow. Great, we had the little devil caught, but what the hell were we going to with it. Then we came up with a brilliant plan. I would play the part of the Terminator. I was to kill the bat. I took an old antique tennis racket and I began to repeatedly beat down onto the pillow, hoping I would crush the evil little mammal. Then the hell-creature suddenly popped out from under the pillow with a look of hatred on its horrid face. I ran. Emily ran. Jane ran. Kelsey ran. We all ran. I was behind them all. I was the one with the bat following at me heels, attempting to kill me. They all ran into another room and slammed the door. In my face. Here I was, the one who tried to kill it, and I get the door slammed in my face. What’s the matter with kids today? Turning their backs on the hero and saving themselves. Anyways I pushed the door open and dove inside onto the bed. We sat in the room catching our breaths for a few seconds. Then we sent Kelsey to find the demon. She found it. It was clinging to the window right above the stairs. I think this was the point that Kelsey found out bats aren’t really mice with wings. The bat glared at her and allegedly hissed at her. We gave Kelsey the net and told her to swing the net as though it were and ax to drive the bat from its post. She did so and the bat did the inevitable... it flew downstairs... and disappeared. We searched and searched, but we could not find the bat. We thought maybe it was gone (I wish) or maybe it was upstairs still. Well, anyways, things settled down and Eve and I went into her mom’s room and watched SCREAM 3 (The original is the best... 3 is OK). It was kind of creepy... no not the movie... there were knotholes on the wall that looked like bats and I was afraid to stay in the room. When we finished the movie Emily had gone home, Jane and Kelsey were going to sleep in Eve’s mom’s room, and Eve’s mom slept upstairs. Eve and I decided to sleep on the two couches downstairs because we thought the bat had settled down upstairs. Then all was peaceful and I wish the story could end here... but all was peaceful for only a couple moments. "Mike, I hear something," said Eve from the couch opposite of me. "No you don’t, wouldn’t the bat be flying?" I replied in an annoyed voice. Eve got pissed because I didn’t believe her. I figured she was just being paranoid. Boy, was I wrong. A few moments later I heard it, too. A slight scratching sound from above. The evil was back. I turned on the light and looked up. There clinging to the books on the bookshelf was the vampire bat himself. "Eve, look up." "I don’t want to" she said in a scared voice. Being the brave people we are, Eve and I awoke Eve’s mom. Eve’s mom came down to see it, and as though it were a cue, when she looked at it, it began to swoop... and I knew in my heart it was after me. After all, I had tried to kill it. We all ran and took refuge in the downstairs bedroom (Eve’s mom and dad’s downstairs room) where Jane and Kelsey slept. We abruptly woke them and shut the door. After I gained up my courage, I peeked out the door and I thought I saw it above the books... but it was too far away. I wasn’t sure. Eve’s mom had me creep into the room were the bat was to retrieve binoculars from the bathroom. I then took the binoculars and fixed them on the alleged bat. I still wasn’t sure. I got closer and closer and closer... no, it wasn’t the bat. It was a shadow from one of the books. Well, I’ll be. Suddenly, the real bat SWOOPED down in front of my face. I almost died of a heart attack. I sprinted towards the bedroom with my running back speed when I ran into a huge linebacker, otherwise known as a door. A door which Eve’s mom had slammed in my face. "HEY"!!!!! Her mom opened the door a crack and I slipped in. I thought we could just stay in there for the night, but then I remembered my pillow... I needed it to sleep and it turns out Eve needed hers, too. I left the room again on another voyage into the room the demon hid in. I retrieved Eve’s pillow and mine. I thought all was well, when the assassin bat swooped me again and I stumbled into the room. We sat in the room and began to strategize. Maybe we could call animal control. Wait, that was an hour away and it was 4 in the morning. Police...? No. What were we going to say? "Hi, there’s an intruder in the house, oh yeah and it’s a bat." I realized we would have to conquer it ourselves. The evil bat must have been outside the door listening. I’m not sure how it did and I probably never will, but somehow, the bad made it’s way through the door. Maybe it came through the cracks... but my belief is that it used its magical vampire powers to warp from one side of the door to the other. Well, whatever the way, the bloodsucker was in the room. Eve flattened herself to the bed. Eve’s mom and Kelsey ripped the covers off of a sleeping Jane (who joined them later when she saw the bat swoop at her on its quest towards me) and pulled it over themselves. I ran to the corner in timid fear. The bat swooped and swooped, but whether it was... a hint of goodness in it’s heart perhaps, or probably just the fact that it’s practically blind, it spared me of being bitten and turned into a vampire. The bat flew to its post above the right corner of the door. I crept into the bathroom in the bedroom and got a prickly toilet cleaner. We gave it to Kelsey and she approached the bat. The bat stared her down, but Kelsey managed the courage to open the door below the bat. The bat held it’s ground. We told Kelsey to hit it as hard as she could to hopefully kill it. She tapped it. She fricking tapped it. It flew out and we shut the door. I plugged the cracks of the door with sheets so the bat couldn’t enter. We sat for a while thinking. It was bright out and the birds were chirping. We came up with another idea. Eve’s mom removed the window screen and Eve and I climbed out the window... Then we saw it on the front porch flying around like a maniac. I crept to the porch door and propped it open and Eve hid into their mini-van. The bat disappeared. I threw volleyballs and other objects into the corners of the room, but the bat was nowhere to be found. It was somewhere in the front porch and I knew it. Eve’s mom told me to get a broom from the back porch. Eve and I went to the back porch. There it was, as though it was anticipating me. It was sitting on the back porch. Eve and I ran back up front and when through the front doors. Eve, their mom, Jane, Kelsie, and I peered at the bat from a window leading to the back porch. We would have to drive it out. Jane decided she would come with me to the final battle with the bat. Jane and I grabbed sticks and brooms and took turns taking vicious and weak blows at the boneless creature. Mostly weak. At one point it hid in a corner about 2 cm high. I swiped it with a thin board. Then the bat got fed up with my beating it and it rushed me and I fell over backwards and banged my knee... hard. I was pissed, to stay the least. I began to hit the bat in a mad rage. Finally, I hit it and it flew out the door into the trees. A cheer of joy erupted from my mouth. The ordeal was over. We celebrated by eating breakfast... then we slept. The next day we found a baby bat in the curtains and we left it outside in a bucket for the mother that night. Hopefully, it was the mother that got it because later it was gone. Looking back upon the situation I feel kind of bad about beating the bat because it was only trying to protect its baby. But I was trying to protect my girlfriend’s family, and myself so all is justified. Jane, Eve, Kelsey, Eve’s mom, and I were all survivors, and we were proud. Now, let me sum this story up into three words. I HATE BATS!
