The Tooth Fairy
Narinder Bhambra

Tania opened the piece of tissue which her teacher had given her and looked at her own tooth. She couldn’t wait to put it under her pillow tonight. Tania was eager to get to bed early. It would be a nice surprise to find the coin in the morning. Her mother came in to tuck Tania in bed and as usual kissed her good night. Mum always left the lamp on; at night. Tania lay in bed and her eyes felt heavier and heavier, and than suddenly, Tania heard a swift kind of noise. She opened her eyes wide as she could see a shadow of the fairy. She sat up and the fairy hid behind the curtain. She looked under the pillow and her tooth was still there.

‘Excuse me please, you have forgotten my tooth’, Called out Tania.

‘You have not meant to have been awake and seen me’ replied the fairy.

‘Sorry I have to go, I cannot take your tooth’, she said.

What is Tania going to tell her friend, what is she going to tell her teacher when they ask her about her tooth!

‘Please don’t go, I will not tell anybody about you’, said Tania.

The fairy flew onto Tania’s lap because she trusted her. It was like a dream, a real tiny fairy was looking at Tania.

"No you do not understand’ I cannot go back to Fairland without your tooth, my wings will be taken of me and I would not be a fairy no more!’ cried the fairy.

‘You do not have to tell them that I was awake’ suggested Tania.

‘No! No! No! we cannot say that, that is even worse, if I lie I will have to get married to that elf, and have to live in that horrible smelly Toadstool, what will all my friends think of me’, said the fairy.

‘Look, nobody will have to know or find out’, said Tania.

‘There’s the invisible fairy watching me", whispered the fairy.

‘Than what can we do’, cried Tania .with both her hands on her cheeks.

The fairy circled round and round the room.

‘You come with me and do what I tell you if you want the tooth remove in exchange for the coin", said the Fairy.

‘Ok’, said Tania as she jumped out of bed.

‘But I can’t fly,’ said Tania excitedly.

‘That’s no problem close your eyes and than open them at the count of three do not peep’, said the fairy.

Tania began to count, with her eyes shut tightly, and opened them at the count of three.

Tania felt as if she was in a strange palace,

‘Where am I’, she said in a panic.

The fairy stood in front of her, Tania couldn’t believe it, she was the same size as Tania.

‘You are still in your room but you are same size as me’, replied the fairy.

‘Must tell you that until we take the tooth back to Fairyland, we cannot turn you back to normal and I will lose my wings forever’, she warned her.’ The rules are that you have to remove the tooth, but first you must earn some wings, so that you can become a fairy than you can remove the tooth and give it to Fairland where it belongs’' advised the fairy.

Tania was warned that she will have to do tasks like clean dogs poo in the; parks.

‘Oh no’, cried Tania. But Tania knew that she had no choice.

The fairy got hold of Tania and flew her out of the window, past seven seas, past the mermaid land, past the never, never land, through a special cloud high, high up in the sky.

Tania never been in a plane before, but she loved the wind against her face.

‘Be careful of the North cloud, they can change and engulf you and the head of the sky sails on the big one over there. He sits and shapes the clouds. Look that one looks like a dove and over there that one looks like a lion.

‘What does the head of the sky look like’, questioned Tania.

‘Its better that you do not know, he makes the thunder and if he sees us, he can change the weather and we will never get to fairyland.’’, as she tried to flap her wings a bit faster.

They went past through six more clouds and as they got through the last cloud there was peaks of a small sharp pointed White Mountains. A white sky horse with wings came up to the fairy.

‘Get on quick,’ shouted the fairy. The horse had wings and flow both of them on to the pointed ice looking mountain’.

It’s beautiful, is this where you live’? Tania was astonished.

‘Welcome to Fairland’, said the fairy.

Come we must not waste time, looking around? Tania saw lots of busy fairies.

‘All the fairies were talking when they saw Tania.

‘It’s the first time anybody has come back without a tooth, now every one is going to find out, unless this girl Tania can do all the Task to safe guard our secret’, they cried.

‘Be careful of the owl. He is the most dangerous and also if the grasshopper catches you will become his slave forever. He made Malina, the flower fairy sit on his back and makes her jump and do not let her fly anymore’, warned the tooth fairy. "He chewed both her wings".

‘Poor Milina’, cried Tania.

The fairy took Tania’s hand to be on the safe side; she did not want anything to go wrong and was determined not to lose her wings.

The tooth fairy took Tania’s hand and flew through the hole in the hedge.

‘Do not answer back to the Superior fairy’. Warned the Fairy otherwise you will fail the test. Just bow and courtesy and say thank you, and if he smiles at you that mean that he is happy with you. And if he is happy than the sun will shine for and extra hour’, giggled the Tooth fairy. But if he does not smile that means we lose l hour of sunshine during the day, which means we have less hours to complete our task.

On the other side of the hedge, there were many other fairies all flying around carrying flowers, Tooth, hair, feather, anything that you can think of.

Tania stood in a short line and waited to see the Superior fairy.

Tania heart began to beat faster and faster, she kept her head down. She could hear him.

‘How are you today’, he asked.

Tania looked up.

‘I am not up there, I am down here’, he laughed.

The Superior fairy was the size of a hamster. He was cute Round like a boll. He gave her a list as long as a toilet roll, Oh no thought Tania in her mind, what a long list. She remember what the tooth fairy had said,

Tania smiled and courtesies at the superior fairy smile.

It was going to be a sunny day today for sure. Tania hurried out of the way, and sat on a rock nearby to read the list. There was a list of 200 jobs. How am I going to do all these?

You have got to do it with a smile and do it as you like it and before you know it you will have earned those wings.’, smiled the fairy.

Top of the list was to paint 100 daffodils.

‘How on earth am I going to paint 100 daffodils?’ Cried Tania.

‘Come I’ll show you, you got to learn from the expert, get the bucket and pour the yellow into it get a bunch of daffodils and dip them in’, advised the fairy.

It wasn’t bad after all but Tania was covered in yellow paint.

Good job the sun was going to shine for l extra hour today that meant that another job could be done today...

‘Let’s paint the cherries, and the berries and again Tania done them the same way as she was taught to paint the daffodils.

The tooth fairy saw Tania and laughed. Tania was all yellow with red spots.

The tooth fairy had a job to do so she left Tania on her own but warned Tania to stay away from the owl. It was the most dangerous in their kingdom, if he found Tania he would take her away and never bring her back.

Tania started work on the toadstool, and had just finished it after half an hour. She could smell the fragrant from the flowers and started to smell some very beautiful large flowers that were growing near the fir tree. She went around sniffing when suddenly she was lifted of the ground as high as can be. She screamed for help, whatever it was, she was sitting on something prickly. She suddenly came down and up again like as if on a funfair ride. She was up as high as can be and than suddenly down again.

"Wee, she screamed as if she was beginning to like it. After about 20 rides she was back on the ground. She looked around and saw a giant caterpillar disappearing as quickly as it came.

"Where am I" she thought.

"Hello, hello what have we here", she heard a voice from behind her.

She turned around and saw two eyes looking at her; she got up and ran as fast as she could. She could hear laugher, she ran at full speed but she could hear the flatter of the wings.

"Run, run, run as fast as you can, it more fun",

She felt shivers and could see the shadow fall from above her. His claws as long as can be would not let Tania free. They rapped themselves around her tightly and she was lifted of the ground once again.

"Where are you taking me" shouted Tania.

"Just higher and higher and higher", replied the voice. As they rose at full speed

She was dropped on a very high peak. Tania realized that it was the owl that the fairy had been warning her about.

"So what are you doing here"? Asked the owl

"You tell me, you re the one who bought me here", replied Tania.

"You are not from our land, where are you from", asked the owl.

I, .I….l m from Preston", said Tania.

The owl was in deep thought, I shall not eat her, and I shall go to her World and have a feast of a life time. Besides there’s more of her than the fairies and those dame fairies are so hard to catch, they are too cleaver for the likings of me", he thought.

"Why are you here", asked the owl very politely.

Tania did not want to lie so she told him the truth.

"So you have come to earn some wings, I’ll tell you what, I will help you", said the owl that will help you to get back home quickly. You poor thing, I’m sure you are home sick."

"How kind" thought Tania, the owl is not bad after all?

"Give me the list", the owl took the roll and started doing the entire task for Tania.

He took Tania to do the tulips.

"Tania" she heard a soft whisper.

At first Tania jumped but realized that it was the voice of the fairy.

"The owl is setting you in a trap". She continued. The fairy was hiding inside the tulip.

"Make mistakes, loads of them, so that when you take the list back to the superior the sun will shine less and less", advised the tooth fairy.

"But why" said Tania.

"Because that dangerous owl likes to sleep when the sun is shining and while he is asleep you will have enough points to get back to your land, in that way the owl cannot follow you to your kingdom, otherwise he will destroy your World".

"Really", cried Tania.

"He loves wingless creatures because they cannot get away". Said the fairy

The tooth fairy was right, she bought Tania here for a reason and she wanted

Tania back home safely. Tania had to trust her friend.

"But he didn’t eat me", said Tania.

"That because he wants you to lead the way so he can eat everyone in your World, believe you me he has finished all the wingless creatures in our kingdom", said the fairy.

Tania did the last few tasks and did them completely wrong. Suddenly the owl put its claws around Tania.

"Have you finished everything", asked the owl?

"Yes" replied Tania. She was not scared of the owl, and could not wait to give the finished list to the Superior Fairy.

"Come on than I’ll take you and drop you to his majesty, It was a swift flight he dropped Tania on the right spot. I’ll come back later to see you", he shouted as he left knowing that his presence was not welcomed by the fairies.

Tania gave the roll of list to the Superior fairy. She looked at his face hoping he would not smile. When he came to the bottom part of the list he did not smile. That wrong, wrong again and again. He just added on the hours.

"Yee Pee" Tania dance and danced.

"I grant you eight fewer hours but you got most of them right, therefore I grant you your new wing. It was magic, they were dancing with joy, and they were flapping with joy. Tania was flying, it was great. The Tooth fairy came and took Tania by the hand and they flew on the largest tree waiting for the night to fall.

"Its going to be an early night for the Owl today and it gives us time to go back and pick up your tooth", said the fairy. But first I have to go and pick up something said the fairy. They flew into the cave near the sea, and found pots and pots of coins. There was millions and millions of brand new shining coins.

"Where did these come from", asked Tania.

"The Moles in the holes, deep in the caves make them in a secret cave and in exchange they want the tooth", she replied.

"Come I’ll show you", she took Tania’s hand and flew deep into the cave that was lit by glow worms.

"Look over there", the fairy pointed.

There was lots of hole at the bottom of the cave and the brand new shining coins were popping out!

"That the moles at work", said the Fairy

"Can I have one", Asked Tania.

"Yes only when I pick up your tooth", laughed the Fairy.

"You only lost one Tooth. Let me take you back to where you belong".

After a long journey back through the window with a thump on her bed

"Tania, Tania" your getting late for school. Someone was shaking her.

She opened her eyes and saw the fairy disappear out of her window.

"No wait come back", cried Tania.

"I’m here darling" replied Tania’s mum.

Has the tooth fairy left you a coin?

Tania lifted her pillow and was relieved to find a very special coin and couldn’t wait to tell her friends and teacher.
