Willow Tree
Ashley Burdett

    Look now
At yonder willow tree,
For what does she weep?

Her tears flow freely,
For much simpler things than love,
Her story,
Brief, yet tragic,
Starts so many years ago.

As a child-,
An innocent most once called her,
The wind would comb his fingers
Through her hair
As she swayed
To some unheard lullaby.

Once and again
She would drop her fingers
To drag across the ground.

He would do nothing more,
Then laugh and watch,
Laugh and gaze upon the immaculate beauty
Who stood before him.

The ground
Much older then she,
Wanted to cage her beauty,
To hide her light
From everyone
And everything.

Time upon time again she teased
Teasing with her playful antics,
Until one time.

One day-
Just as any other-
The wind combed his fingers through her hair,
And she fell,
Dragging her fingers along the ground.

Upon this moment-
Perfect was the timing-
Theground seized her fingers
In his hands.

To this she fell
Upon her kness,
Begging
To be set free.
To once again feel the wind
Clumisly draw his fingers through her hair.

The ground released her,
Knowing in his heart,
He would never be free
Of her enchanting spell.

And still she cries,
For when the wind,
Runs his fingers through her hair,
She falls,
Close to the ground.
-Oh so close to him.
