THROUGH THICK AND THIN
Have you ever felt like someone has betrayed you, or broken your trust in them? Friendship. Its a connection that anyone can have with another person. At times, it seems so simple, while others, it can be very complicated. It can make a person seem as an angel that has been sent just to be by your side. Or it makes you never want to talk to any other people ever again. True friends are one of the most important things you can have in life. It can be the reason for war, peace, life, death, happiness, or depression. True friends are hard to find, but can be found in unlikely places. Loyalty is the most important part of being a true friend, because true friends are always loyal.
Loyalty is an important part of the story Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes. In this story, Charly Gordon is a mentally challenged man who works at a factory with Joe Carp and Frank Reilly. Joe and Frank begin by not displaying true loyalty in friendship. My friends from the factory Joe Carp and Frank Reilly took me to Muggsys Saloon for some drinks. I dont like to drink but they said we would have fun. I had a good time. (D. Keyes, Pg. 209) Was this merely just friends going out for drinks and all having a good time? No. It was planned by Joe and Frank purely for the entertainment of seeing a mentally challenged man being drunk. Joe and Frank were not loyal friends to Charly. Even though Frank and Joe show many signs of un-loyalty throughout the book, they do come through for Charly at the end. When Charlys IQ is back at 68 (as it was before the operation) he comes back to the factory. A new worker makes a crack about Charly being a real smart guy, and then Joe stands up for Charly. Leave him alone or Ill break your neck. (D.Keyes, pg.224) This is when Joe shows true friendship and loyalty to Charly.
Another book that shows the significance of true friends is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, by J.K. Rowling. In Harrys fifth year at Hogwarts, the Daily Prophet (a local newspaper), is writing about Harry, saying he is going mad because he thinks Lord Voldemort is back. Even some of his friends start believing that Harry is either lying or crazy. Seamus Finnigan and his family believe the Daily Prophet, and he also thinks Harry is mad. Hes right, I dont want to share a dormitory with him, hes a madman, said Seamus. That is out of order, Seamus, said Ron. Seamus yelled, Do you believe all the rubbish hes come out with about You-Know-Who, do you, you reckon hes telling the truth? Yeah, I do! said Ron angrily. Then youre mad, too, said Seamus in disgust. Yeah? Well, unfortunately for you, pal, Im also a prefect! ... Anyone elses parents got a problem with Harry? He said aggressively. (J.K. Rowling, pg. 218) In this argument, Seamus is disloyal to Harry. Ron is a real loyal friend to Harry and stands up for him. It was not bravery Ron was showing here, but true, loyal, friendship.
Loyal friends can be found in the most unlikely places, and in the most unlikely people. You can find this in the movie: Disneys Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl. Now, pirates and people who make weapons really dont seem like the most likely bunch to show true friendship. But the movie shows that friendship can be found in anyone. At the end of the movie, Captain Jack Sparrow, the pirate, is about to be hung for all his acts of piracy. Will Turner, the blacksmith, steps in and shows his loyalty to Jack by being brave and trying to save him. Together, Will and Jack fight the entire Navy who are trying to capture Jack. When the commodore says, You forget your place, Turner, Will replies, Its right here, between you and Jack. Will shows his loyalty to Jack, even if he has to risk his own life. This is true friendship.
Even in this crazy world of wars and arguments amongst countries, there are still examples of loyalty. In World War 2, Germany was not loyal to other countries, such as Russia. The Germans claimed to be allies with Russia, but then invaded Russia without warning. Some countries did show loyalty to each other. When the Germans also invaded Poland, France and England stood up for Poland and declared war on Germany. So as we can see in our world, friendship and loyalty can be the reason for war or peace, and living or dying.
Even in my own life, I can see many things that can be used to show loyal friendship. My friends have always been loyal to me. Every year, as I perform in various dance performances, I always have friends and cousins that come and see me and support me. Also, when I was in kindergarten, I was diagnosed with pneumonia and I had to stay at the hospital for a while. Even though I didnt really get it at the time, now that I think back on it, I was so blessed to have so many people that were loyal to me. I had family members, cousins, best friends, and even a teacher show loyal friendship to me. My best friend and her family came to visit me. They cheered me up by bringing me toys to play with, my favorite treat, and making me laugh. My teacher came to bring me a book that the class had made for me, and she played games with me. Now that I think about it, I dont think that I would have been able to make it through my illness and all the scariness of being in the hospital if I hadnt had so many loyal people by my side.
As we have seen through these examples, true friends are loyal. These examples of loyalty all show how significant loyalty is in literature, the world around us, and in our own lives. Loyalty is critical to being a true friend, as shown by Charly, Ron, Will Turner, England and even my own friends. As we look at these examples, I can only hope that we can all apply them into our lives and learn what it means to be a loyal friend.
