The Struggle Within: Sestina Number One
Michael Harris

The ghastly claws of It struck a deathblow
to my inward man, my soul.
I staggered a bit, reeling from the shock
of the attack. I regained my footing,
watching every minute movement of my adversary
in the process. He lunged at me and I went to duck.

Exactly when I went to duck
that sent It to a meeting of his own deathblow.
I watched attentively as It, my long standing adversary,
regained his posture. My inward man, my soul,
was anticipating Its next move. My footing
steadfast, I watched as It recovered from the shock

of its mistake. The aforementioned shock
did not last long. He lunged at me and I endeavored to duck
but It anticipated it and caught me. I lost footing
and It fell on top of me. It wasn't a deathblow
but It still had an advantage. My soul
was in a state of perplexity, my adversary

had me. I wrestled on the floor with my adversary.
I had yet to recover from the shock
of him lunging at me. My inner man, my soul
was in Its hands. If only I had managed to duck
his attack I wouldn't be in this predicament. A deathblow
was what It was attempting to do. It regained Its footing

and grabbed me by my shirt. My soul
was in torment just from being in Its presence. I was in shock.
It held me up by my garments. I wrestled, trying to regain footing
but it was to no avail. It punched me in my stomach, a duck
would not have worked. It had accomplished another deathblow.
After that It ran away but It would come again, my eternal adversary.
