Snow Falling

Lost in her world of make-believe,
She sits with her face pressed against the glass
Of an attic window that has
Been smeared with dirt from the ages it has seen.
A tattered curtain blows in the draft
From a crack that is near the ceiling.
A shiver travels through her tiny body
And with it, she is thrown back into her world
Of utter perfection
Where lovers are united,
Families stand together,
And fathers hold their little girls
Instead of being torn apart by war.
Her thoughts fly to her father,
Sent across a great, vast sea
To a foreign land
That she did not know.
Countless times her mother tried
To look the tiny angel in her face
And tell her of the travesties her father would face
To tell her that there may come a chance
That they would never be reunited again.
Instead, her mother would look into the face of her angel
And indulge the child�s flights of fancy
With stories she created on a whim
About her father�s grandest adventures
In the foreign land,
When nay word had been received from him
For months and months passed.
Now the tiny child sat,
Stowed away up in her attic,
Face pressed against the glass
In hopes that she may catch a glimpse of her father
Across the vast, vast sea in his foreign land.
She expulsed a breath
And with it came a tiny cloud
That lived its life within her gaze.
A chill danced its way down her spine
As she remembered a time
When her father had found her playing in the snow
She had made haste
To play in the freshly falling snow
And she had forgotten her mittens.
He had found her romping and playing games
With her friends who would never exist
And her tiny fingers turning nearly to ice.
Scooping her up,
He had clutched her to his breast
And drawing each finger to his lips
He had kissed them
Until warmth flowed through her veins once again.
Another chill came
And violently took her away from her memories.
Her eyes flew open
And she saw that warmth
Flowed through her tiny fingers once again
Except this time her father had not saved them
But her own kiss had been the culprit.
A tear formed and made its way
Cautiously down her cheek.
She pressed her fingers to the glass
In futile attempts to draw her father
From his foreign land.
Yet, alas, through the window
The world was devoid of life,
Save for the trees that swayed delicately in the wind.
As the angel began to cry,
The heavens opened as well
Summoning forth a fury of powder
In the same white as the tiny angel�s bedding clothes.
The world�s colors blended together
In the angel�s eyes
As she searched for comfort, meaning, her father.
Her thoughts swirled about her
Much like the world outside the window did.
Outside her window,
She noticed a figure fighting his way through the storm
Her breath fell short
And for an eternity she fell as still
As the world outside her window.
She shot down the stairs
Like the bullet from an enemy�s loaded gun
And flew through threshold of an open door.
She paused for an instant,
Searching with her dark eyes
For the words to sing
What she could not begin to fathom.
She ran and buried her face into his coat
Feeling the warmth she had longed
To experience since the moment
He had boarded the ship that took him to war.
Slowly, her warmth,
Along with he,
Melted away,
Leaving her
Buried deep within the snow
With no friends who failed to exist
And no one to kiss the warmth back
Into her fingers
When she should come to be found.
