Raining Cats And Dogs
Colin Baker

It was, I thought, a metaphor
that talked of cats and dogs,
in terms of falling like the rain
in spoken dialogue.

Yet while out walking yesterday
the queerest thing took place.
'Twas dogs and cats indeed that did
rebound from off my face.

Oh yes ! 'Twas raining cats and dogs
I know you've heard it said.
But truly several ginger Toms
did strike me on my head.

And as I howled then craned my neck
to gaze up at the sky.
A bull dog, then an afghan hound
did strike me on each eye.

'Twas at that point I threw up arms
and cried out " what the heck ? "
But scarcely had I closed my lips
two shih-tzu's struck my neck.

A dizzy me now did collapse
my head one great ca-hoot.
Yet worse was still to come I fear,
six poodles in my boots !

The next thing I remember then
was waking up in bed.
A hospital ! That's where I was !
They'd patched and stitched my head.

That's why I now believe the tale.
For me it's myth no more.
It can, and does rain cats and dogs.
It's no mere metaphor.

So now whenever raindrops fall
I keep a watchful eye,
for furry things like dogs and cats
atumbling from the sky.

"drop dead funny and clever, might want to invest in a steel umbrella." -- curious.
"Hi again curious and thanks for reading. Your advice is funny, not just in a literal sense, but also because I did originally try to work the concept of an umbrella into the poem, but failed..Hopefully it's none the worse for it though. Happy New Year by the way for 2006 etc...." -- Colin Baker.
"Laughed out loud and nearly coated my screen in Dr Pepper!! Thank you Colin for a truly brilliant poem!!!! Happy New Year!" -- Briony C.
"Hi Briony and thanks for posting your comments. I'm sorry it so nearly cost you a can of Dr. Pepper, it's far too expensive ! lol Happy New Year to your goodself also..And a belated Merry Christmas" -- Colin Baker.
"This was a great piece of work!!I am sorta new to this site and only read a few things but this was by far the best!! I will definitely read some more from you. Do you think you could read my story "Blood of the Battle" " -- Brandon Kinsler.
"Very funny indeed! Most enjoyable." -- Iain Spittles, Cardiff, UK.
"Hi Ian and thanks for commenting. You're not too far from my own part of Wales either. What a small world !" -- Colin Baker.
"A nice diversion from your lengthy, fanatical, boring political dissertations. Although it's fantasy-like, it makes more sense than many of your serious efforts. You may have found your true niche. I suppose you can consider this a complimentary review, even from me. " -- Richard.
"Thank you indeed, Richard...." -- Colin Baker.
