As I stood in my local grocery store, I notice a women walk in with
two bags of grocery and head straight for the service counter. Seeing it was about 10
minutes to close the service counter was well shut down. I watched in the distance as she
grabbed the attention of a stock boy and asked him a question I could not hear. The stock
boy disappeared and a few seconds later I heard the stores manager called over the P.A.
When the stores manager came out of the office he was followed by my fiance whom I
had come to pick up. When she got to me I lost thought of the women and concentrated
on kissing my fiance. Together we walked to the employees break room to get her stuff.
On are way to the back of the store we walked pass the service counter and we both over
heard the ladies story. Apparently she had bought the groceries 3 or 4 days earlier and
wanted to exchange them because what she had was nothing that she could give her
children in the morning for breakfast. The store manager asked the women if she had her
receipt, the women replied that she has never keeps her grocery receipt. The store
manager politely told her that she couldnt return them without a receipt. The women said
she had no money and at that point began to cry. By this time me and my fiencee were
entering the back room. When we were all alone she turned to me and said that she felt
sad for the children of this women. I asked her if I should go back there and give the
women some money. She said that would probably be the right thing to do, so I walked
out of the back room and walked towards the service counter only to find nobody there. I
met my fiance at the door of the back room and told her I was to late and the women
must have left. We walked out of the store together and got in my truck. I started the car
and my fiance told me she had forgotten to punch out. Seeing it was very cold out I told
her I would go do it for her. When I walked in the store and over to the clock I turned
enough just to notice out of the corner of my eye the women from earlier crying, but
standing in the back of a grocery line with a couple box of cereal, some milk and other
items I couldnt make out. Knowing my little town was full of kind ,christian, people I
figured someone else had given her money. As I was walking out I ran into the store
manager and I asked her if she was the one that had given the women some money and
she replied ,with an annoyed tone in her voice, No, IM not about to give my money to
some person I dont know, plus everybody knows you need a receipt to get your money
back.
. It seems like every time you turn on the T.V and turn to any of the many news
channels you hear of new crimes and the fall of another famous person. You hear of a man
who stole millions of dollars by hacking into the local bank system, the on the next
breaking news story, a women is suing her boss because he is he asked what her weekend
schedule looked like. You sit there, not caring about either story, and you tell yourself
Oh well. You continue watching as the many products you dont need, made by
companies that just last year took its factory from Michigan to Japan so that a guy you
will never know can save a little money. The news comes back on and a breaking story
flashes across the screen. Seeing this causes your back to straighten and your neck to
actually hold up your head. You get an overshot from a helicopter of smoke coming out of
a building, the reporter cuts in and says something but you cant hear. You turn up you
T.V to hear this life changing event, but still no sound. The screen goes black but returns
with a reporter who mike is now working. You search for the remote so you can turn
down the volume on the T.V so that your ears can remain attached to your head. With
skill you keep one hand on one ear as you turn down the TV You now can hear the
reporter say something that is being repeated more and more, another senseless act of
violence by a lost generation of teenagers. After several minutes of live on-site reports the
reporter turns the story over to the news anchor. This in my mind is were the fun begins.
The reporter turns to the worlds leading expert on teenagers via satellite, who just so
happens to be 480 years old. He tells all who listen that the reason this happened is sitting
on the shelf of your local video store and on your T.V after 8:00pm, and that we shouldnt
punish these children because its not there flat that Hollywood made a movie were this
happened, or because in a popular video game you have to do something like this to win
the game.
I wish it was that easy. I could tell my boss that I am late because last night I
watched a movie were all the workers were late, therefor I shouldnt be punished because
society says I was influenced by a movie that had no respect for people showing up on
time for work. Then I would punch him in the face because I never got my raise. The fun
part , according to this theory , is that all I have to do is watch that movie every night and
I should never get punished.
Any sane person knows that if I were to do that, I not only would be fired, but I
would be sued by my now former boss.
Why as Americans do we accept theories like these? Because we either dont care,
or we are to afraid that a society that has been created to keep the peace, is what is
causing the war. I believe that both are true. There is a line deviding this nation in two. On
one side we have the people who dont care. These people are born, raised, pay those all
important taxes, and die. There maybe more to there lives, but only if you count money,
sex and in most cases drugs. These people are rich as much as they are middle class as
they are the poorest of the poor. These people may have a fortune 500 company but they
never really did anything because they dont ever change what they do between the time
they wake up to the time they dream of genie. These people work hard 8 hours a day so
they can have there satellite dish, computer, radio and nice car, but they never really do
anything because they dont ever change what they did between the time the work whistle
blows and the time they fall asleep to there favorite game show. These people are
unemployed, tied to a spouse by a common law marriage( I still have no idea what that is,
because its not marriage) having children whom they abuse because they can get annoying
or to bothersome. Why do we do this?
