It Happens To Us All

Death, its inevitable. One day everyone has to die. But its mostly a decision we can make. Live healthy and prosperous lives or drugged up depressed lives, or just not living anymore. People are sometimes faced with dire circumstances, and they break down either into confinement or death. In Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, Jerry Renault, the main character is faced with discerned impossible circumstances and almost gives into the ever-looming threat of death. In the book Seize the Night by Dean Koontz, Chris Snow, the main character almost realizes why he fears death so much. The characters in these two books show what challenges can do to their moral standards. The storyline, characters and main idea of the two books reflect on the idea of death through challenges that the characters finally pull through.
Although not the most talked about issue in modern life, death and suicide are very real. In Chocolate War, Jerry realizes this in a private boys school were tensions are extremely high between the students. The Vigals, a group of tough and tormenting seniors force Jerry into a fight with one of the biggest, meanest football players in the school. Its obvious that Jerry will not win, and this represented an ominous future. It finally came down to a decision between death and getting the living junk beat out of him. He thinks about suicide and its benefits but then remembers its disadvantages. According to an article published by Nami.org states, When all hope is lost, some feel that suicide is the only solution(n.p). I think this is true also in Chriss case. In the book Seize the Night, Chris is also faced with a daunting challenge. He has to find a kidnapped baby, but in an abandoned haunted military base were his mom was killed. In the story the ghosts apparently affect him, which makes him real irritable and depressed. He breaks down in a delusion of guilt for the things hes done, and constantly wants to jump off a ledge or pull the trigger of the gun pointed at his head. Both of these characters showed that their characters break down under pressure and think about death.
Life will, even if just for one day, become easy and enjoyable to live. In the storyline of both of these books, the characters are faced with a challenge and ultimately attain it after extensive physical and mental challenges. Jerry shows that he doesnt have to be strong to beat the big, mean and ugly people in life. But those people broke Jerry down to the edge of insanity. He proved that brainpower could win by beating the football player. In a surprise ending he was able to outwit him by reluctantly kicking him in the part that hurts the most. Sure this isnt rocket science, but its intelligent. But everything before that, Jerry was constantly suffering from threats and harsh words towards him. Chris also showed that willpower, brainpower and audacity can win over anything out there to slow him down. In the military base, while the ghostly presence was altering Chriss state of mind, he didnt let himself stop. Even though he almost did kill himself, he kept on moving and he did finally find the kidnapped child. But Chris also showed how close some challenges in life could break him down to the brink.
The main ideas of these books reflect on two things, death and pulling through. These people in the books are faced with completely different challenges, and they both go though the same emotions of death. Jerry in Chocolate War almost drove himself of a cliff, while Chris almost pulled the trigger a couple times in revelation of what hed done. The main theme of Chocolate War is that of death and facing challenges. In Seize the Night Chris Snow is also challenge and thinks about death. A theme of that book is death and suffering. In both the books it shows what emotions run through people when they are put in challenging positions.
The storylines, characters and main ideas of Chocolate War and Seize the Night, all reflect on the idea of being faced with thoughts of death and facing near impossible odds but pulling through. These two books are similar in different ways but strongly compare in the pre-mentioned areas. They also show a real life lesson that nothing really is impossible. As long as people believe in themselves they will succeed, even if they dont intend to.
