Christmas Morning
Sophie A McDonald

Christmas

My eyes flash open although the room is still dark.
A rush of excitement and nervousness fall over me.
Without hesitation, I hop out of bed and head down the stairs.
Through the darkness I see the outlines of five stockings.

My heart seems to skip a beat as I approach the one labeled Sophie.
I take a deep breathe then reach for it.
The large sock is heavy as I lift it from its hook.
I carefully lay it onto the floor like its very delicate.

My fingers search for the light switch,
As I flip it light floods through the decorated room.
I then see the plump, filled stocking, lying helplessly on the floor.
Despite myself I smile.

I kneel down on the fuzzy rug and begin to unload the stocking.
Carefully I pull out a few candy canes,
Then some oranges and socks,
I know the good stuff lies at the bottom.

Next I reveal a book from the stocking,
then some clothes,
My hand reaches in once more,
I am surprised to find an empty stocking,
I wonder, was that really all I got?

Without expecting it, disappointment pours over me like a bucket of ice water.
I dont want to seem snobby, but I was kind of expecting something better.
I then realize that I am tired.
I decide that I should just go back to sleep and forget about it.

My feet walk me over to the light switch.
Just as Im about to turn the lights out and become sad,
Something catches my eye.
Standing very still, against the white wall,
Lies a beautiful pair of cross-country skies.

I stare at them for a moment,
Then rush over to get a better look.
A note is tied around the tip saying, To Sophie, From Santa.
This makes me smile, Santa and my dads handwriting must look a lot alike...

I am a lot happier now.
For today is Christmas,
The best day of the year.
