Where a boy stares at some red brick houses and quilts of grass,
there was once a modest mass
of servile humans, young and old,
cutting daily at hunger, in a fossil forest beneath fields of green and gold.

Perhaps one day, we'll sink
a well here instead -559 feet deep- then drink
to those boys and men of December 1st, 1860,
toasting each, from crystal glasses filled with a mix of congealed blood and planxty.

For now though, the boy takes his forward gaze
in hand and goes on his way.
For my part, I pick
up a beech stick,
and gouge in a patch of rich vermillion earth for all to see:

DISCLAIMER: STORYMANIA DOES NOT PROVIDE AND IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR REVIEWS. ALL REVIEWS ARE PROVIDED BY NON-ASSOCIATED VISITORS, REGARDLESS OF THE WAY THEY CALL THEMSELVES.

"Please explain, I guess I'm just not imaginative enough to get it. " -- Richard.
"Richard thank you. And your request for explanatory information has little if anything to do with your imaginative abilities, and everything to do with my neglecting to place a brief background to accompany the poem when first posting. It actually refers to a mining disaster (an explosion as it happens) which occured at the Blackvein colliery in South Wales, UK in December, 1860. The graves of some of the children killed in the disaster (only a small number of bodies were recovered) are only a few miles away from where I currently live. Colin" -- Colin Baker.
