Angel Turns Pro Lawrence Peters
Angel tested the knot, pulled tighter, tighter and looked back at Ran. Bad. Strangers until the explosion in the hallway where Ran lived and Angel was working happened. Sheets of fire had them trapped on a ledge of the apartment building.
Ran, leg broken off at knee, white fire burning in his mind from the pain, fought through the madness and took keys and a badge from out of his pocket and held them up.
"My place. 4-F. Down there. Big fat black one first, then green, red then arghhhh!"
He screamed and Angel's heart flew from him. Helpless, and the real fire crept closer.
He knelt next to Ran.
"Where's the bag. I'll get it and be back before they can reach us. Where?"
"Left side of closet in bedroom. Black/yellow."
Then the fire in his mind came forward and burned and for Ran it was easier to just pass out.
The flames wavered behind them.
"Trapped in a fire with a broken fireman." Angel thought. Ran's bag held rescue gear and could save them. It was either/or.
In a timeless second Angel was a kid again, high in the air above it all, in a place that he'd created. He did it before, then. He could do this now. He stood up and tested the useless disconnected fire hose around his waist.
"This" was sliding down two floors out of thirty from the outside on a nasty winter day. The fire would kill them before long anyway.
Angel flipped himself off the ledge to fly, fly, arc jerk then crash sideways through the window. Took a moment to find the pieces of himself. Found the bag, now over his shoulder and, among the shattered glass and blind smoke and flames, reached out a hand to begin his long climb up.
Angel turned pro. He could do it. All his life it had been a question of choices, and he'd faced every one of them.
And now there was this.
The hose snapped about halfway up. He arched backwards through the air. Arms outstretched in flight.
Firemen got through the flames to Ran and raced him out; one of their own.
Wayne Wong's truck stalled and he crashed his fist on the dashboard and he ground the useless starter.
Angel hit the top of Wayne's recycling truck carrying empty plastic bottles, crashed through the roof and spent a moment in the multicolor world, stepped out, shook himself off and gratefully accepted a slug from the bottle of a passing bum who'd watched the fall.
"That was something, kid. Wow. Like on TV. Hey, what's your name?"
"Angel."
"Give me back that bottle then," he said, "I didn't know you was no pro."

"An unusual writing style which works well with this piece of writing. I could sense the urgency! Karen" -- Karen, UK.
"A good read. Not too long, not too short, just right. Hey, I've got a request, could you write a story about a dragon? If you could, I'd be over the moon." -- Bernay.
