Personal Trauma -- An Unwilling Spectator (Essays) Can't really describe what this piece is about, except that it was, for me, a very disturbing and traumatic experience, even if I didn't really see it with my own eyes. Hearing it was bad enough. [1,234 words]

Kelly's Neighbour
Roxanne Kendrick

Kelly has never seen her next-door neighbour, no matter how hard she's tried. From the landlady who lives on the first floor, Kelly learns that her neighbour's name is called Marc. She has no idea what he does, but she wants to meet him.

Kelly confides in her long-time on-line pal through ICQ.

"According to the landlady, he sounds really nice," Kelly types.

"Really?" came the reply from Mickey Mouse, her on-line pal.

"Yes. And it's odd to live next to him without having seen his face. I've stayed here for only six months and I know everybody!"

"Maybe the guy just isn't the sociable type," MM advises wisely. "So cool off first."

Kelly ponders and decides MM is right. She will give Marc some time to get adjusted. After all, he moved in barely a month ago.

The landlady is the gossipy sort. She tells Kelly that Marc has "to-die-for" looks, manners & clothes.

"You like men's clothes too?" Kelly asks, astounded.

The landlady tisks. "Don't be stupid, girl," she purrs. "From a man's clothes, you can see how much money he has."

Kelly is highly doubtful. "I don't care how rich he is. I just want to say hi."

"He's a real owl, he is," the landlady says disapprovingly. "Comes home at all sorts of hours, or never comes home at all." She sniffs. "Well, so long as he pays his rent on time, it's fine."

Kelly tries her hardest to stay up at night, hoping to hear the click on her neighbour's door to indicate his presence, but she eventually nods off at three in the morning.

MM is unsympathetic. "Donald Duck," he chides, "you're crazy."

Kelly defends herself. "I just want to meet him."

"You're obsessed!"

"And you're jealous, lala."

MM logs off. Kelly is sorry she's provoked MM, and immediately apologises.

MM forgives her, says he wasn't angry at all. They agree to finally meet for coffee.

Kelly is just coming out of her apartment when she hears a click next to her. Looking up, she finally sees her new neighbour, Marc.

"Hello," he smiles, extending a hand to her.

Kelly shakes it. "I'm Kelly. Pleased to meet you."

"Marc, & the pleasure is mine."

Kelly doesn't tell him that she's been dying to meet him. She's too tongue-tied to do so. Except for the to-die-for clothes, Marc is everything the landlady has said.

"Wait till Mickey Mouse hears this!"

Kelly enters the little snug cafe and chooses a window spot. Mickey Mouse will be wearing faded black jeans and a blue shirt with a Mickey Mouse logo and she wants to spot him first.

Mickey Mouse taps Kelly on the shoulder, and her greeting dies on her lips.

"Marc!"

Mickey Mouse smiles. "Close, but not quite. It's Morgan."

Kelly hits her forehead. "Damnit. Twins!"

Morgan laughs as he settles down opposite her. "So my guess was right. You're living next door to my brother."

"How did you know?"

"I didn't. Lucky guess. Marc moved recently and you happen to be living in the area of his new house. I put two and two together..."

Kelly pouted. "You should have told me."

Morgan grinned. "It's nice to see you acting like a ninny over someone you've never met."

Kelly sticks out her tongue at Morgan, but smiles when he reveals he'll be moving in with his brother next week.
