As if in a trance, I lie next to her, watching her breathing gently, admiring her smooth, white breasts, partially compressed as she lay on her side, her long shapely legs extended, longer than mine.

I lay my face on top of her round, firm buttocks covered only by the thin, white sheet, with its earthy scent of love and lust. Without interrupting the stillness, I slide the sheet aside with my chin and kiss her cheeks, as I have so many times before, as I have kissed every other inch of her warm, sensuous, body.

In these wee hours, I am king and she is my lovely queen, but she is far more elegant than I am regal, and closer to perfection than any other woman I have known.

But soon, comes the dawn and she will leave, as she always does. And I will miss her as I always do. I never think of losing her for I could never bear it.

Suddenly my trance is broken. Without a word or glance, she leaves my bed like a cat in the dark. I hear the click of a cigarette lighter, followed by a flash, tracing her movement toward the end of the bed. It isnt time for her to leave yet. Is something wrong? I ask her. Tell me.

I know she can hear my heart pounding. She stops at the foot of the bed,
and even the tiny red glow of the cigarette in her mouth reveals a dim, but tantalizing glimpse of her immaculate and perfectly shaped body.

I smell the smoke floating from her lips as she drags on the cigarette. Panty hose draped across her forearm, she looks back at me, and even in the dark, I can follow the strange smile forming in the corners of her mouth as she begins to speak.

Sweetheart, your last check bounced again. So from now on, its cash only.

"Excellent work! A pure kick in the teeth of an ending! Smooth prose. Keep blasting away. Good luck!" -- F.J. Gouldner.
"I appreciate your comments, F.J. Actually,I inserted the unedited word file when I first submitted it and I just now re-submitted the edited version, which I think is a little better. It'll be posted soon." -- DK.
"Great writing, great ending. There's a slight danger that the title could give too much away, apart from that, perfect." -- David Gardiner, London, England.
"Lovely. I forgot about the title as I read it so didn't get it from that, in fact at first I thought she was dead. This is one of those where you just know something is 'wrong' but it kept me guessing until the end. Oh to be loved the way he loved her. " -- Sooz, Dalton, Cumbria, England.
"Excellent, i loved it, nice ending." -- Josh / Axey.
"I read it. Nevertheless, I don't intent to give it a review. Keep writing, anyway, others seem to be thrilled." -- CJW.
