Wild Women

One summer I went to Scotland, to a tiny fishing village called St. Abbs. I stayed in a house called Pen Rhyl with three girlfriends. Of the four of us I was the only one that had a man in my life but we still caused a bit of a stir. Two blondes and two red heads (at that time I was one of the redheads!).

Perhaps the villagers werenít used to such goings on, because we did our own thing and didnít really care what other people thought about us. We were on holiday and we were going to enjoy ourselves and so we became the wild women of Pen Rhyl. We were all rather respectable but the thought of all these locals thinking we had lead exotic and slightly racy lives was rather endearing.

The village had a small store come post office and we used to pop in every now and again. The postmistress was a very nice lady who had a husband who still thought of himself as a bit of a ladies man. He thought that she didnít know what he was up to, but his wife knew exactly how his mind worked. He flirted and thought he was being so outrageous, when all the time his wife knew exactly how much rope to give him with which to hang himself. She was always perfectly charming and knew that none of us would have done anything about his flirting. I think if any of us had responded he would have run a mile Ė in the opposite direction. He may have thought he was Scotlandís answer to George Clooney, but we all thought otherwise!

In the summer time there were boat trips from St.Abbs to see the seals and the local bird life. One day we all went and I unfortunately, felt a little seasick, as the sea was a bit rough. I sat in the boat feeling a little green and was determined to enjoy myself and not to appear a wimp as everyone else was fine.

One of the boatmen felt sorry for me and started to crack jokes, which did take my mind off the fact that the water was choppy to say the least. I donít know what it was, but, he did take a bit of a fancy to me, perhaps he liked red haired ladies tinged with green and had secretly always wanted to be a knight in shining armour. Now if he had looked liked George Clooney I would not have minded but he was a cross between Penfold (Danger Mouseís companion) and Norris Cole a character in Coronation Street. It didnít help that he talked like Norris Cole and came from Halifax. Not that there is anything wrong in coming from Halifax but the whole package didnít make we want to leap at him and say save me. There was also the fact that he picked on the only unavailable one of the four of us. I got teased for days over that one.

I loved that holiday. We were good friends all together having a good time and we all knew each other so well. We could do as we pleased, let our hair down and really enjoy ourselves. It was a lovely place just to relax and have fun and we certainly made sure that we did that. It was the freedom to be away from everyday life for a week, the chance to live permanently in the fresh air was wonderful.

I donít think that we would have been forgotten in a hurry and that was rather nice.
