That Night
Mandi Butkovich

"Do you know the greatest feeling in the world?" he asked his victem.

Her eyes, red and over-flowing with tears, widened as she whimpered through her gag. She shook her head, bouncing her ebony curls.

"Well, Catherine, it's the feeling of being in charge of someone's life...and death." He touched her tear-stained cheek and pressed his lips to her forehead. Her whimpering became a sob. "Do you not want to die?"

Catherine shook her head again, her face becoming more pleading as another wave of tears poured down her face. Her hands worked at the ropes that bound them. She moved her legs under her dirty green gown, obvioulsy struggling against more rope.

The man walked across the room to a small table, his boots sounding on the cobblestone floor. His hand went directly to a short dagger. He picked it up by the hilt and ran his thumb down the length of the blade. When a trickle of blood ran down his thumb, a suductive but deviant smile spread across his lips. He put his thumb to his mouth to remove the blood. He then turned to Catherine.

Catherine began screaming through her gag. She tried her best to get away from her attacker, but he seemed to cross the room in two steps and seized her by the hair. She screamed again. Catherine fought against him, but he still kept a fistful of hair. With the dagger in the opposite hand, he cut through her locks.

Now released from his grasp, Catherine tried to crawl away again, but it failed again.

"You will not get away! No matter where you go, you will not find your way out of my labrinth! Miles and miles of twists, turns, and deadends; it's hopeless, my dear!" He boomed."Which to you choose: a long, painful, and rather dreadful death in my tunnels; or a fast and seeminly painless death by my own hand? It's your choice, my Catherine."

Catherine shook her head, choosing neither. Her eyes poured even more tears down her cheeks. As he walked closer, she scooted herself away, but backed into a wall.

"Oh my, now you've gone and made it easy on me. Now that's no fun at all. It's the chase that's exciting, but you got caught! Such a shame." A grin spread across his lips.

He flick his wrist and the dagger changed possition. He took another step closer and she turned her face away. He grabbed her and forced her to look at him.

"Dear, turning away from danger is a sign of cowardice. Are you a coward?" Catherine bobbed her ebony locks. "It would only make sense to kill a coward, would it not?" She stopped nodding her head and began to shake it. "Oh, so you're not a coward? Then you must watch me. Keep your eyes on me, or you die, okay?"

He grabbed a handful of her gown and pulled it up just enought to reveal her lower leg. With the blade of his dagger, he gashed her calf. Catherine screamed and pulled away, turning her head in the process.

"Catherine! I thought you weren't a coward!" He threw her to the cobblestone."you know that I'll have to kill you now, right?"

With a flash of steel and a gush of red, Catherine's body lay limp on the cobblestone.

                     *********

My eyes shot open. The lightlessness of my chamber filled my eyes. My night shirt was soaked with my own cold sweat. I threw my sheets off and got up to light a candle. I grabbed my robe and sat in one of my chairs, staring at the empty fireplace.

Why was this memory coming back to me? Why should I dream about my wife's death?

It's been three months, but no one's been caught. Even I couldn't help her, being bound myself. I, however, proved to be no coward. As the man cut my skin, collarbone to belly button, I stared into his dark face, giving him no hint to any pain.

He didn't toy with me as he did my Catherine. He just asked if I was ready to die. When I shook my head, he asked if I was a coward; I shook my head again. Maybe he didn't see any joy in toying with a man. After he cut me, I must had passed out because I woke to my own blood stained sheets, not cobblestone. The thing is, I remember everything about that night, except him.
