Melting
Johan Keylay

Nobody every stopped to think about whether or not it had feelings. Its time on this planet, in its present form at least, was severely limited. At this very moment, its mass was reducing as it melted—-liquid running from its base, across the counter and into the sink.

It felt no pain, but it did experience an acute feeling of loss as it shrunk. If only someone were to return it to where it had been formed, it could at least maintain its present form without reducing further—-perhaps, if a caring soul were to replace what had been lost, it might even return to its former glory. It didn't have the ability to think, but, oh if it did! If it did, it would recall pleasant memories of being in the dark, solidifying within its own compartment with others, exactly like it.

Darkness wasn't an issue for it—-hadn't been in issue, at least until it was taken, against its will, from its dark, frigid home. The creature had taken it, along with several others just like it, but the others were thrust into a giant glass cylinder, held captive in a liquid prison, reducing in size until they dissolved into the liquid. If you listened closely enough you could hear them scream.

Why was it left on the counter when the others were used? It didn't know. The ice cube remained on the counter, melting.
