Ze Zen Ta (The Way Of The Thinking Fist)
E Rocco Caldwell

North of Tokyo International into the Hamamatsuche bus terminal and the WTC building illuminated red lights of several neon advertisements that bled over the small crowded area not more than a few blocks from the Tokyo Tower. A roll of buildings stuffed like an abandoned accordion nothing more than awnings and signs. The street refused to release the building rain water as it swelled against the sidewalk. The traffic was at a crawl. The constant hum of electricity kept the signs alive twenty-four hours a day. The life of the city was in the flow of capital and advertisement was the pump which pushed life through it. Japan learned well from its surrogate father, America. The noodles steamed inside the white ceramic bowl. Clark studied the chopsticks in his large hand with the interests of a child. His hearing drifted to the patter of raindrops off the yellow plastic awing overhead. The flight from Seattle had been a long one and the small bag of dried apple slices the stewardess provided only went so far. He could feel the acid in his belly boil in reproach. The scent of the noodles, scrimp and hints of wheat marvelous in his nose. But how the hell did he work the chopsticks? He was tired the normal results of a direct flight in an aged 7E7 that defied science why it still operated. The American airline couldn't afford any new aircraft subsequently the American aircraft manufacturing business was nearly gone. The small mousy Japanese man whose head barely rose above the counter slid a metal fork beside the bowl of noodles. The metallic shimmer against the street lighting made the fork appear silver. It was difficult for Clark to read the smile in the man's face with so many lines running through it. Clark managed a clumsy thank you in Japanese. The smile vanished from the man's face.

"You are American?" the elderly Japanese man asked in broken English. His hair reminded Clark of vanilla ice cream on a cone. Most of the man's teeth were missing.

"Yes," Clark answered knowing why he asked. Americans were hated by many in the world especially the Japanese. There was much unhappy history between the two countries.

"I thought you might be British." Disdain darkened the man's face but his Japanese heritage refused him to be impolite. Clark decided to hurry and eat the noodles.

Mister Shinjuku was to meet him in the lobby of the Shimbashi Hotel, a dive in a great location. All he knew of Shinjuku was that he was very rich and very unusual. Clark picked up the fork and pain pricked between every knuckle of his right hand. He grimaced not at the pain but at the memory of only winning the bronze medal. What the hell was he going to do with a bronze medal? No multinational corporation wanted a loser to push products! He dropped the reoccurring self ignominy played over and over again since the Olympic Games. He was hungry and that was the only thing that mattered.

It was a game giving the American the wrong directions. Clark wasn't adroit enough to pick up on it until he found himself wondering in a locale draped with poverty like his neighborhood back in Jersey. The streets were narrow about the width of a sidewalk lined with aged buildings and very little light. No one was out of the street and that should have spoke to Clark's street smarts. There was something lying across the street a few yards away. It was cloaked by the dark but Clark felt it might be a body. The urge to run electrified his body with a sort of freezing sensation. He balled his hands into fists and slowly approached the figure. It was a white male, American, barely alive. Knife wounds dotted his body. The red in his white shirt was like the color of ripe watermelon. It bled from the holes and the blood settled where the shirt was stuff at his waist. His eyes rolled back leaving only white orbs as life left him. His countryman died in his arms.
