At A Wto Rally 4
E Rocco Caldwell

Inside the next room is an inquisition. Chains, slates, racks, ropes fill the room. The people on these horrific devices of terror are the dreamers and questioners of the world. The sound laments of dying thoughts and hopes in the cries of agony from the broken bodies of these tortured people. Their punishers wear black hoods and all of the ones in anguish are naked and bloody. The overseers of the cruelty being unleash on the poor individuals wear priestly gowns. These overseers are religious pundits adorning gold and jewelry many are obese and of poor hygiene. My guide seems bothered by the horror in front us as much as I am. One of the overseers, the one enjoying the misery the most, notices my guide and me. The obese man works his large frame over to us. He casts a stare of skepticism at both of us. The blue veins in his face is a serigrapher's delight for the lines trace a lineage of poor circulation and over indulgence with wine and food. His breathing is labored and the sweat pours down his red round face.

"How did the two of you get in here?" he demands.

"This is a purgative, your eminence," my guide answers the fat man. The fat man manages a smile.

"It is always good to show one his wrongs and led him back to the flock. I am a Bishop and pretty much oversees this place. Come, follow me, I wish for you to totally understand what you see here." He hacks up in his throat something foul and spits it. I follow the trajectory of his spit as it glistens in the electric lighting appearing to be a streak of yellow and green. It splashes against the face of what could be one of the pretty socialists I came to the rally to meet. She is spread eagle on a rack. Her majestic naked body tensed in pain. The Bishop lustfully stares at her body stained in equipment oil and grease.

"Why put them through so much pain?" I ask.
"The Romans nailed Christ to a cross because it was necessary. So what do you think we will do to anyone who attempts to overthrow the consortium?" The Bishop asks. "It is for their good! What would this world be like if anarchy ruled?"

"Incongruity is the death of civilize society," my guide says. The Bishop walks over to the woman on the rack. He licks his lips and removes his red glove.

"Exactly," the Bishop answers as his hand rubs the woman's torso. "These delicate creatures," he wipes the spit off her shaking body, "can make everything fall in around us." The Bishop strangely reminds me of myself in the way he stares at the woman's body.

"Such cruelty is needed?" I ask.
The Bishop's visage darkens as a grin works its way through his thin lips. He stares at my guide for a few seconds and then walks away.
"What did I say wrong?" I ask my guide.
"It isn't what you said but how you said it. It shouldn't have been a question."
"It should have been a statement." Such cruelty is needed should have been a statement of fact!
"How much do you really want changed? How much do they really want changed?" I know he means the protestors outside far beneath us and the haze of teargas.
"Is exploitation and censorship what America is based upon?" I ask him.
"Open your parochial mind!" He nearly shouts. "It is what the world is based on!"
We are standing in front of another door. I don't know how we even reach the door. It is a silver door holding characters of some cryptic code and I feel that things are happening at a faster pace.
"This is the final door," my guide says. His voice is so irrevocable and a little scary to me. He waves his hand in front of the silver door and it slowly opens letting incredibly tense light into what I realize now is a dim room. The light floods around me as if I am standing in the wave of an ocean of luminescence. The light strikes at my eyes and I have to shield them as they try to adjust. They slowly do.
