The Clearing
E Rocco Caldwell

In the autumn of 1966 just before my father was sent to Vietnam my mother's sister moved into a green house near a pond in Virginia with Uncle Buster and their eleven children. She was my mother's only sister so both were very close which meant we had to make the long commute from Edgewood Maryland to visit their new home. The house was already furnished when they moved in but my Aunt replaced all of the furnishings except one very old well crafted dresser with swirl mirror.

The 1st day

My cousins Daniel and Marshal both my age led me and my older brother to a clearing pass a crown of trees not far from the house. Daniel said it was dragging distance. They told us the clearing was actually a grave where two old ladies were buried after violent deaths of strangulation. Their murderer, believed to be a white man from a neighboring farm, was never found nor their gravesite ever made hallow. I didn't know what hallow meant at the time. I wished I had.
"Throw a tone in the clearing and tonight you're feeling the same choking they felt before they died," Marshall said fighting a smirk. My brother played off Marshal's dare but it intrigued me. I called him a liar and he dared me again. I picked up a small rock near my Chuck Taylor's as Daniel grew suddenly afraid as if he knew something horrible was about to happen. I tossed the rock into the clearing now covered by years of leaf fall. I never heard the stone hit bottom. Something seemed wrong after that as if I broke something rare.

That night

My night's sleep was interrupted by a warm choking sensation at my Adam's apple. I opened my eyes to the dark room where by two cousins and bothers were asleep on the oak floor. There sat the dresser with mirror, the only remaining piece of furniture from the previous owners. A strange alluring made me stare at the dresser until I fell back to sleep. The choking had stopped.

The 2nd day

"Well?" Marshal asked reminding me of the fat cat that ate the canary. He was beaming with satisfaction. "Did you feel the choking?" I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of being right. We stood at the clearing that cool autumn morn. "I can tell in your eyes you've been choked!" he laughed.
"That's all a bunch of lies, Marshal!" I snapped picking up two rocks. Without thinking I tossed them into the clearing. I can still see them flying from my hands and wishing I could stop them. The sight scared Marshal because no one had ever thrown rocks in the clearing a second time! A wind stirred through the tree but not a leave on the clearing moved. Marshal said I released a Hank and I would have the devil to pay! Hank was what my cousins called a ghost.

That night something occurred that to this day I can't explain. The warm choking returned but I decided I would try to sleep through it but when I didn't open my eyes the choking grew worst. I opened my eyes directly on the dresser and mirror in the corner of the room and to my surprise two old ladies sat on the dresser in silent conversation. They were dressed in what women wore in the 1940s. My heart raced, banging inside my chest. I had nowhere to hide exposed on the floor. I was frozen with fear. If I moved it would disturb the serenity of the dark. They might never see me if I didn't move. I was wrong because they stopped their silent conversation and in unison turned and stared directly at me shaking their heads letting me know never to disturb their resting place ever again. I could see right through them but at the same time see their insidious grins. They knew that I knew they could get me anywhere I went at anytime. Respect what is hallowed or suffer the consequence was all I remembered when they vanished.

The 3rd day

I refused to go to the clearing or sleep again in the room with the dresser and mirror. I never again threw a rock into a cemetery or look directly at a corpse at a burial. My Aunt's house eventually burned down for some unexplained reason. Perhaps that was good. The dresser and mirror kept the ladies chained to that house now they were free to cross over.

One day, after three decades, my wife wanted a dresser with mirrorneedless to say, she never got it!

"imagination of a young boy fueled by tales or reality? who's to say. nice story of childhood." -- JAG.
" Rocco, You have a wonderful way of writing something that is factual, a little frightning and add HUMOR to it as well!I liked reading this! Also on a personal note - thank you for your encouragment on my stories. It is much needed this week as I recieved my first rejection on a (children's Christmas story)I had submitted!!" -- chistine tricarico.
"Join the club! I don't remember how many I have gotten. A lot of times it's just because they don't read first time authors and have nothing to do with if your story is good enough to be published or not. I have had some stuff published at small magazines to help boost my confidence and to build a resume! Getting an agent isn't a bad idea either. But get one who doesn't want your money but will represent you because they believe in your talent! Your stuff is very good! I wouldn't tell you so if I didn't believe it. I would tell you the truth! So hang in there! A little prayer doesn't hurt!" -- e. rocco caldwell.
"I believe ur story. I liked the factual, no nonsence reporting style. its pretty scary. thanks for sharing ur experiences on storymania. will read all ur work...all 84 pieces when i get time :)" -- Avis, Mumbai, India.
"Thank you, Avis. I shall do the same with your works." -- e. rocco caldwell.
