Sirens
E Rocco Caldwell

Silent waves ease themselves against the jagged stones of the faade high above nestled in the hillside rests the sentinel lighthouse beaming a red glow that paints the stones and the waters in a small cove. There is a hint of pique on the wet air, a strong aroma of resentment. The sea is master. Rocks dot the black waters moving towards the luminosity of the moon off the waters. There it is golden like the hair of a Swiss virgin. At night things can appear to be piquant but the night is protean capable of altering the shapes of things. It can create a red herring to distract and to forget what happen. How long can the water conceal? The stories speak of eternity for the sea refuses to give up its holdings.
His hands were fanatic working the constraints and weights but it was his heart that worried him for it has never spun so fast. Funny how one mind worked in certain situations? He wondered if he cleaned the kitchen of every stain, every drop but how could he really be sure. For the moment the gentle sway of the water against the boat was soothing and the night chill helped to control the sweat. He almost had it completely in the water. Over his shoulder the red light of the lighthouse and the black crest of land. He would say she took the dog out on a walk something she did all the time to help with the pregnancy. It had gotten difficult seeing her in that way no longer alluring or sensual. It was only fitting he sought out someone to fulfill the yearning in his pants but she couldn't understand that at all. He chuckled because he was sure she did now. Into the water the carpet duct taped with weight went; first the bubbling and the swirl of water then it faded from view deep into the depths. Guard my secret he whispered.
But what was his secret truly? That which drifted to the bottom of the sea of something deeper and most perverse? The waters clapped and the boat's engine pinged he managed a smile as land approached and the outline of the lighthouse defined. Where was the remorse or guilt all that could be found on his visage was the wisp of congratulations for he accomplished what he set out to do. Near the cove he turned his boat's engine off and retrieved his fishing gear. No the fish weren't biting but it didn't matter. Some neighbor would found the dog still with the leach attached roaming the quiet neighbor. Everything in the house would appear to be as if she decided to take the dog for a walk. The coffee pot would still be plugged into the wall socket and breakfast on the table. He suddenly felt tired and so laid in the only bed inside the boat's bow. But that was the worst thing he could have done because the sea was ubiquitous, the sea was divine.
His eyes opened to the darkness inside the bow but he could hear steps on the deck of his boat. He was a light sleeper and had heard no approaching boat not even the splash of oars. He managed to find the gun he kept in cases of emergencies. How long had he been asleep because it was still night the moonlight made everything appeared silver even the beautiful naked woman standing in the stern of the boat? She played with her long hair. She smiled and the gun dropped from his hand. Her body was that of pure sensuality every curve held a purpose. She held her arms out to him and he stumbled into her breasts. The cool whisper of the wind spoke of release and her voice that of a song, no that of a siren gave him instructions.
They found him with a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head. His wife's body a week later washed up on shore still wrapped in duct tape.
