''Is the specimen alive, doctor?'' the nurse
asked, slipping on a pair of surgical gloves.
''Oh yes, quite,'' he replied, doing the same.
''He's just in a state of hyper sleep.''
''Hyper sleep?'' she asked, quizzically.
''It's a state of sleep induced by unnatural means to
put the subject in a deep, coma like sleep for
long periods of time. Months, sometimes years, as far as
space travel is concerned.''
''For what purpose?'' she asked.
''To keep them alive, to begin with, and second
of all, to keep them from aging. Say for instance,
he was going to travel to a planet two million
light years from his own. Well, my God, he'd be
long since dead by the time got there, nothing
but a little dust and DNA. If it wasnt for the
hyper sleep chambers, that would be the result.''
She looked amazed at the thought. ''So he is
alive and well?''
''Yes, but only further examination will tell us
if there's been any damage to his inner workings,
his brain. There shouldnt be, for there is always
plenty of oxygen in the chamber, but....I've seen
instances where the subject seemed fine, healthy
on the outside, but their insides were a mess. It
happens. Unexplainable to me, yes, but it does.''

''Are we ready?'' he asked her.
''Yes...I suppose so...''
''This is your first time, isnt it?''
''Yes,'' she said, sheepishly.
''Dont worry. it'll be alright. I'm here to see
you through each step.''
''Thank you, doctor.''
The doctor pulled the sheet back to reveal the
whole specimen, and it was nude. The nurse blushed.
''Funny looking things, arent they?'' he said.
''Yes,'' she said, her face a bright red. ''Very
funny looking.''
''Go ahead,'' he said, nodding at the limp figure.
''Touch it.''
She reluctantly reached down with her index finger,
pressed it against it's chest. She could feel the
thump...thump..thump..of it's heartbeat. The look
in her eyes was one of awe. ''It's heart...its
beating normally,'' she said.
''Good, he said. ''Now at least we know his heart
is in good shape. Now for the rest of him.''
''How do you know its a him?'' she asked, looking
puzzled again.
He laughed a little. ''The gentinals,'' he said.
''Always look there first, to tell them apart. It
works almost every time.''
''Almost?'' she said, looking apprehensive.
He laughed again. ''Yes...almost. I once found a
certain species gentinals on the back of their
head. I could just picture them mating.''
She giggled. ''Yes, that would be very interesting
to watch, indeed.''

As they both stood leaning over the body, the
doctor suddenly got a worried look on his face.
He spoke to the nurse in a low whisper.''Nurse,
you havent told anyone else about this specimen
coming in, have you?''
''No, doctor. As soon as you contacted me, I came
straight here from class. I havent talked to anyone.''
''Good. I want to keep his presense here a secret
for now.''
''Why?''
''For fear of my life. I overheard the Elders talking
two days ago; even as we speak, a battle cruiser
is on its way to his home planet, to destroy it.
The Elders consider him a risk. His species are
violent, and unpredictable. They have already
almost destroyed their own planet, and the Elders
fear that they would spread their methods of
destruction to our planet and others as well.''
''So you want to keep this one for study, since
he may be the last of his kind?''
''Exactly. Well, Im through here for now. You go
ahead and finish up, then put him away on Ward 51#.''
The doctor turned to walk away.

''Doctor?'' the nurse said, getting his attention.
He turned. ''Yes?''
''How should I label this specimen?''
''Oh, Im sorry. Label him, ''human,'' and his home
planet as, ''earth.''

"Not so far off -in fact, in exactly the same vein as- Edward Crayley's 'The Alien', the top-title-hitter here I believe, although in my opinion this is far better written and if that is the best story on this site, then this is the mother of all fiction ever written in the world... ever. Which it isn't, but I liked it :)" -- Rowan Davies.
"An alien from another world -- End Quote. Now simply by the virtue of it being an alien isn't it already from another world. Unnecessary redundancy. " -- Rhonda Ryder, Porn star extraordinaire.
