Louis Jolliet And Jacque Marquette

Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet led the first French expedition down to the Mississippi. They hoped to find a a trade route to Asia and to preach their religion to the Native peoples they met along the way.
Jacque Marquette was born in Laon, France on June 1, 1637 and joined the Jesuit order as a young boy. The Jesuits were a religious order of men within the Roman Catholic Church. As a Jesuit, Marquette went on missions to preach to the Native peoples in different parts of North America. During these missions, he lived among the Native peoples, learning their languages and customs.
Louis Jolliet was born in a French settlement called the Habitation of Quebec in 1645, in the present day province of Quebec, Canada. Jolliet also studied to become a Jesuit priest, but gave up his studies and turned to cartography, or mapmaking, and hydrography, the study and mapping of the earth's lakes and rivers. Jolliet became a courer de bois, or "Runner of the Woods." Couriers die bois traveled deep into the wilderness of North America and traded for furs with the local Native peoples.
