If Eternity Allows
Tara Bridget Moore

If,

by the will of God I could place your hand upon my heart,

I would,

so that you would know how much I loved you,

with the innocence of a child, in that moment when our eyes first met.

My hand would rest upon yours, our fingers entwined, like roots growing into the earth, clinging to life, trying to live, but unable to without the touch of the other,

for there is no life without leaves for the bough or soil for the roots.

How can I live without the sun? The sun which shines from your soul?

Without you, my heart lies wilting in the shadows,

dying a slow death.

For time always surrenders to destiny, and all that remains above faith is love, a love so endless that even I do not know its depth.

For how can one know the depths of the sea or the height of the heavens?

Left to rage against the coming of the dawn,

I slowly surrender,

courageously, but in the end,

I succumb to the vagaries of time and my unwillingness to forget,

you, and the spark of your soul, the shyness of your smile and the generosity of your heart, given so freely and without prejudice.

For we have pledged ourselves to the spiritual laws of truth and goodness, the scales of justice balanced.

For all I have known or ever will know, was seen instantly in the moment I peered into your eyes, so vast and inscrutable, like the heavens.

For I shall remember until time ends,

and if eternity allows, beyond.

For you shall be on my mind, forever,

until that last breath,

until I am no more.
