Happy Songs
David Daniels

She would lay in bed
Crying in the night
Afraid of the moment
When Daddy held her tight

She was so afraid
She didn't know what to do
Afraid of his voice
When he whispered "I love you"

She hoped and prayed
That tonight he wouldn't come
So young and innocent
So much damage done

She was afraid to talk to Mommy
She couldn't admit that Daddy was bad
She would spend her days
Feeling lonely,confused and sad

If only she could tell someone
About all of her fears
But whenever she tried to talk about it
She would burst into tears

Maybe if she prayed hard enough
God would make Daddy go away
But her prayers were never answered
And her sadness grew with each passing day

He would whisper in her ear
That everything was all right
But she knew it was wrong
The way Daddy held her tight

Was she different from others
Did she do something wrong
There once was a time when she was happy
There once was a time she sang happy songs

But she no longer sang
All she did was cry
Her happy songs ended
The night her innocence died

She kept her terrible secret
That Daddy said to never tell
For if it were to be told
Daddy said she'd burn in Hell

So she waits every night
For Daddy to visit her bed
And when Daddy touches her
She lays motionless pretending to be dead

Maybe it was her fault she thought
Maybe she was to blame
She could not escape her sorrow
She couldn't deal with the shame

Finally after years of abuse
She got the courage to tell
Then they took Daddy away
And locked him in a prison cell

Daddy is gone now
But still she has trouble sleeping
Because she hears her Mommy every night
In the kitchen quietly weeping

But Mommy said it wasn't her fault
That she did nothing wrong
Finally she sleeps in peace
Finally she can sing her happy songs
