A Beach Fable
Joe Newton

"Why", asked the little girl,"does the sea
Go backwards while we have our tea?

"No silly,that's when the moon"
her brother said "is at noon."

"Son" said their father,"if you will tease
your sister, stick to birds and bees.
For truly, its often dead of night,
When stars are out,the moon shines bright."

"Look", said the little girl"now the sea
Comes racing in;its chasing me"
"Yes", hurry,mother cries,"that's the tide
Which neither sun nor moon can hide."

"Oh," said the little girl"now it's clear
That things are not as they appear
To humans ,who seldom get it right
When judging all things by their sight."

"Nor",said the little boy,"did the stork
Deliver us for all your talk.
For, watching people on the beach
Has shown us what you did'nt teach."

"Yes, that's a funny thing we've found,
That people do things on the ground
In couples, by nature's kindly light
And not only when in bed at night."

"So" said the siblings, "we've found you out
But dont feel badly; we shan't doubt
Your loving care; or the other things you do
That help us know we love you too."
