On A Napkin At Rialto's
Ulysses Hero

On the juke box arm
you'll find my hand
poised, ready to play your tune;

in the shop window my burnt reflection,
in the corner by the till:
my shadow, rooted, idle.

I drank and I waited,
the coffee failing to filter your absence.
I listened to the slow chatter

of a clock's hands
as they talked through lunch,
the whirl above my head

told me you would arrive,
and soon, and I believed it.
Outside, in the streets dim light,

labourers with pneumatic tools-
mark a slab with a cross
and drill out my heart.
