Scarborough Fair Part 3
E Rocco Caldwell

"Why did you think of her?" Wright was probing from something but Rye couldn't figure out what.
"What do you mean?"
"You associate guilt with her."
"I don't know what you mean. She was just a woman I knew." Rye hesitated. "A woman I dated once."
"Tell me about her if you please?"
Rye let his shoulders slump from the weight his mind revealed concerning Brenda. "She was this woman I knew, not all together attractive she looked more like the mother of your best friend. She had curly brown hair and she wore glasses." Rye took in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. "She had a very nice body though. I remember the first time I saw her, I noticed her body before anything else."
"You didn't care for her but wanted her body," Wright said.
"I guess. I knew she was insecure about her looks and that she was hungry for a relationship. I could read it in her face me being a psychologist."
"How do you know that you're a psychologist?" Wright questioned.
Rye's tried accessing some data he could use to verify his profession but his mind ran blank tape. "I just know it!" He stared out in the darkness towards Wright's outline by the glow of the fire. "So I manipulated her and got her to fall madly in love with me. She fell hard. I was the center of her life and could do whatever I wanted. The strange thing is that I enjoyed having her so devoted to me but I never did anything for her. I never took her out or let people see us together."
"Dismal!" Wright said. "You are a dismal creature, Rye."
"We had sex almost every night at her house or mine. Than one day, I just grew tired of her like the way a child did a new toy. And her affections became suffocating. I wanted to get away from her so I ended the relationship after a year."
"She didn't take it well did she?"
"She killed herself." Rye stared at his hands he held in front of the fire. He felt a warm tear slip down his left cheek. "It's difficult to realize that the devil in life isn't some mythological pointed-eared, horned fallen angel but it is yourself, your desires." The memory rose up like a sudden fog. She was in his arms on her bathroom floor. The shower still ran hot water and mist was everywhere. The mirror fogged and the shower-stall thick with blood. Her naked body still majestic drenched with water and blood. The slashes at her wrists were as wide as her mouth. She was pale from the lost of blood. On her face was the muse of forlorn and in her glazed eyes sat accusation. "Even in the heat of the bathroom she felt as cold as the night."
"I haven't been totally honest with you, Rye. I'm here because you question where here is! What if I told you that here is hell and you are paying for your sins?" Wright asked.
Rye fought back the raising fear that he would be in hell for all eternality. Why not, he considered. He refused to believe in God and he had been responsible for Brenda's death? Could he be in hell paying for the sins he committed over his life?
"I don't believe in hell," Rye said.
"That's of no relevance because one doesn't have to believe in hell to be in hell!" Wright smiled the light of the fire glistened across his teeth. "You arrived here from no where with just pieces of your memory intact and you carry guilt inside you. What else would be hell?"
"Do I have to relive her death over and over for all eternality?" Rye asked. He wasn't sure if he believed the old man but he couldn't ignore the possibility. "I can't do that!"
"Its out of your hands I'm afraid." Wright began extinguishing the fire by pouring water from a canteen on the orange flames. The sanguine glow diminished pulling from rocks and off Wright. The encroaching obscurity of the night made Rye was like water moving over a beach.
"Do you have a place to stay?" Rye asked.
"No. But staying out here wouldn't be a good idea once the sun goes completely down. The Wing wraiths, you know."
"I thought you said you were new to this place?" Rye's suspicious nature crawled up his spine like a chill. Wright let a deliberate smile replace the one he had been sporting.
"I said that I was new around these parts. Wing wraiths are the same everywhere."
"I've been meaning to ask you, why the round stones?"
"Round is the symbol of perfection, but wing wraiths are imperfect. They would never dare approach such things." The fire was out and the last beam of light died at the horizon. "We should hurry!" Wright reached into the vest pocket retrieving a round smooth stone. "How far is your house?"
"Just over that crest of hills." It could have been Rye's imagination but the night sky seemed to drop some revealing the stars that much closely and giving him an acute sense of trepidation like the anticipation in a horror movie.
"Hurry, Rye."
